Yeah I remember Sony said that "For now" playing games online is free. I'd rather pay 50 bucks every year then being hit with random 30 and 20 dollar bills in order to play one game.

PSN is still free, and you're not paying for being online, you're paying for the upgrade that allows you to play the game online.
