What gets me is why anyone would want a $600 launch console to come away the victor of this gen. It sets a bad precedent for the future and confirms just how impressionable large groups of people can be.

Don't worry, by then Blu-ray drives will be a lot cheaper, so the PS4 and 720 should lauch at about the same price.

The launch price was a major stumbling block for the PS3 and the $500 clearance price for the 60 GB models isn't that much of an improvement. Remember Sony had a limited supply of 20 GB models for $500 last year, so there is ultimately no real price drop, just an increase in supply for $500 machines.

Though I'd be surprised if the PS3 did worse than it when it launched last year. Plenty of PS3's will move during the holiday season as its game line up is steadily improving (which has been another critical stumbling block for the system). On the same note, I don't think PS3 sales will be able to surpass the Xbox 360 nor the Wii in sales.

For what it's worth I voted option 5, but I think I made a mistaking by assuming this was talking about US numbers only.
It is for US numbers, I find it funny people think it will drop in sales 50% when this year there will be a 499 60gb still on shelfs and perhaps a cheper 80gb with much more games. Last year in December it sold almost 500k just in US, to me that is surprising so many would buy it even if it was just launching as well.

Not sure it depends how much people still hold the Playstation name in high reagard. Im in the U.k and everytime i walk in the local GAME shop most people are checking out the Wii games or 360 games. the strongest lineups this year are definately from Nintendo and Microsoft.

Well think of it this way from March till July PS3 only sold 300k , so that means Dec 06 sales surpassed that many months of Uk ps3 sales...It will be interesting though on holiday sales in EU for PS3 seeing its extremely expensive over there, isn't it like 800 usd. even with the higher standard of living that's a lot

PS3 is clone of Xbox 1.

PS3 arrived after 360. - Xbox after PS2

Ps3 high priced - Xbox high priced

PS3 lack of games in opening year - Xbox the same.

Xbox alowed time for PS2 to gain titles and momentum.

Same is happenning now with roles reversed. albeit not in Japan.

Option 3.
It's not going to go away until after Xmas 2008, and even then it'll be more a GC type disappearance (fading into the background but not discontinued).

I can't really make a good prediction because I don't keep up with all the sales numbers and I have no idea how much a normal holiday season affects sales of consoles.

But I don't think last years PS3 numbers should be used as a gauge. Last year PS3 was brand new with a promise of great games to come and mind blowing, competition-crushing graphics. Almost a year later, nearly every PS3 game has been delayed, gone multi-plat or gotten underwhelming reviews.

PS3 still may do well, but alot of the people waiting for a PS3 aren't waiting for Christmas. They are waiting for a big pricedrop and/or better games.

At which point do these people say, "I'm done waiting, Sony!" From what others have said, the only real push this console has is the "Playstation" name itself, which is quite marred alongside Sony's for that matter.
