Friend codes say hello?

Gamecube with a grand total of two online games says hello?

Nintendo deciding to shaft Sony and make a cartridge-based N64 ending their cooperation, leading to the creation of the Sony PlayStation says hello?

The Gameboy Micro says hello?

SoulAssassin, face it. Nintendo takes risks. That's why there was the Virtual Boy, that's why they made the power glove. And those things just bombed themselves to oblivion in a combustion of poor sales and lacking software selection.

When has Nintendo teh pulled a Dreamcast, then gone out of business? Never, and they never will. But I think failing consists of less than actually blowing all your money up in your face in an epic explosion.

They got into the business with a risk. The NES worked and that one risk made all the others possible.

Nintendo, anticipating that their long planned out disc drive peripheral would become a commercial failure, sold the system through a subscription service called RANDnet, rather than selling the system directly in Japan to retailers or consumers.

Unlike the N64, the 64DD can boot up on its own, without the need of a cartridge on the top deck, because it has a standard OS. (First console to do this?)

Much like the Super NES had the Satellaview online service in Japan, the Nintendo 64 64DD had the RandNet service. Launched in December 1999, the RandNet service allowed gamers to compete against each other online, play new unreleased games before they hit the stores, surf the Internet, listen to music online, and much more. The RandNet Starter Kit came packaged with 64DD machines and included everything a gamer would need to access the service (the subscription cost was ¥2500 per month):

RandNet was a semi-popular service, considering the limited 64DD user base. February 2001 the plug was pulled, leaving all the RandNet hardware useless. Nintendo bought back all the RandNet-related hardware (gamers could keep the 64DD which was more than able to function on its own) and gave all users free service from the time the closure of the service was announced until the day it actually went offline.

Released games;

* F-Zero X Expansion Kit
* Japan Pro Golf Tour 64
* Kyojin no Doshin 1
* Kyojin no Doshin Kaihou Sensen Chibikko Chikko Daishuugou
* Mario Artist: Communication Kit
* Mario Artist: Paint Studio
* Mario Artist: Polygon Studio
* Mario Artist: Talent Studio
* SimCity 64

There was a Doshin sequel???

"Doshin the Giant Rescue from the Front by the Toddlers that Tinkle at the Large Meeting-hall"

In this dream world, Doshin is now imprisoned and you can "Tinkle" 2D hearts on people and even the giant himself.

after creating monuments in 'Doshin 1' and their counter part pavilions, children will appear in the Expo area and you can "tinkle" on them with your hearts and they will join you, (also known as Teamers, or teamsters). There are two other teams you can choose from at the start of the game, and with enough pavilions completed you can battle the other teamster groups in a tinkle contest, if you win the losers team members become neutral and can be added to your team, you can have 6 other children in your team, this gives you, 6 more times the tinkling hearts when you go to try free Doshin.

n64dd has the only game that lets you pee on children.

game over, juno.
Youve obsiously never played Postal 2. You can piss on anyone, including dogs, cats, elephants, cows etc. Then you can beat them with a shovel to death, pour kerosine on them, throw a match on them, chop their burnt head off and kick it around like a football.

I think you have officially lost

Nintendo said online game wasn't something they were looking into at the time. The fact that the Gamecube has the option for it was nothing short of a miracle.

Yeah, these I agree with. The Gameboy Micro just seems so unnecessary.

One of the great quotes of the last century involve the last CEO of Nintendo saying "Gamers do not want to play online." He literally said that, look it up if you want. These two issues go hand in hand--Nintendo's utter fear of the ability to virtually meet and interact with strangers resulted in the strange phenomenon of friend codes, which, as xbox live has readily demonstrated, puts a huge limit on what kind of online games can be played, and how often it will be that you can find a good match to play you. Nintendo covered its ass by saying it wasn't looking into online gaming at the time, even though that's what saved the xbox, and goaded the PS2 into providing it too.

Moving to this generation: Xbox Live returns triumphant, Sony copy-cats a PSN with Home for Miis, and Nintendo....enforces a system that prevents you from meeting new people online.

Are you beginning to see where this becomes a "bad marketing decision" and not a "decision"? And where that steadily crosses the line into "could have been a lot more awesome, so easily, that it seems a stupid thing to do"? Especially, how, in the end, that defines what fail is?

Yup! And when taking risks, there's always a chance of failure. Which is why they had some failures.

I would really consider friend's codes as more of an inconvenience as opposed to a failure. I doubt the Wii or the DS would have substantially higher sales if they had easy access online play.

Friend Codes are no failure since they do what Nintendo wanted, they're just stupidly annoying.

Marketing?

Nintendo could easily add 'proper' online to their repertoire, they've been sticking to their guns for years.

For reasons unknown perhaps, when the Gamecube came out, they said online wasn't a big deal, but it was still future proofed by having the modem port, and now we're seeing online slowly come together, Strikers, MoH;H2, (hopefully) FFCC.

People think nintendo are behind the times with their online policies, I think they're waiting for the market to catch up.
