So why on earth does anyone need BlueRay.
Mass effect is a massive game, the graphics are amazing, surely this shows that you can still stick with Dvd9.

Because other studios aren't as godly as Bioware.

Most gaming studios would struggle with making a game like mass effect and require 3 DVDs like Blue Dragon WITHOUT it being an FMVfest.

Because if blu-ray wasn't necessary for games, how else would Sony justify its presence?

They are thinking it will help 5 years from now, as they have seen a trend of games getting bigger. That is a big part of Playstations design, attempting (not always succeeding mind you) to make it better in the latter part of the gen when all three systems sell at profit, so the masses will pick it. Unfortunately for them, it means it will be some time before any differences are seen, if at all (ie: the video card isn't as powerful as they claim). Also, Nintendo is directly countering games getting bigger, by starting a trend towards them getting smaller, which also makes BluRay unnecessary.

Mass Effect may also be smaller with smart design methods, a creature in Spore is supposed to be 4 or 5 bytes, most game creatures take up millions of bytes on a disk. This is actually a Bioware trend too. A map in Neverwinter Nights takes up less than half the space of a map in Baldur's Gate, and is far more graphically complex. (True, it's a tile based game, but there was a lot of game design that went into making data sizes small.)

I've been saying that devs need to figure out a way to make games smaller for some time now and have met heavy resistance from NGW forumites. I have to continue believing my thought is the one in which the industry should be heading and not towards creating 50gb games. I honestly think Sony had backwards thinking in this regard.

I agree. We all have to remember that you will actually have to load this 50GB of data. And the sad reality is that bluray isn't quite at that level to load data quickly... yet. I mean the ps3 will never be there, its too late, so much data on such a large space on a drive hardware that is in its infancy. Next gen bluray (or hd dvd) will have a better shot at using the tech better. Giant maps and files will only lead to slow loading and choppy play.

DVD has taken a while to get to where it is now. I believe the 360 DVD drive runs at 12x (as you may have heard when you turn your 360 on...) which is fast as far as dvd is concerned. A quick drive coupled with a disc storage that isn't huge and smaller files makes for fast loading and seemless chopless play.
