Li Cha is the best new member we've ever had in my eyes. Please stick around.

On topic now, I agree Nintendo does need a new IP. Pikmin was pretty good, but we need to see more of it and definitely a few wii specific IPs to really showcase what they can do in terms of motion sensing. I don't blame Nintendo for being so cautious because anytime they attempt something new it doesn't succeed. But at the same time, before at least they were trying to do something new. This generation they've been using the same IPs with motion controllers and a similar formula. At least take a few risks with some games Nintendo, whether they be new IPs (preferably) or old ones.

Did everyone forget about Disaster: Day of Crisis and Project H.A.M.M.E.R (scrapped)?

Those were new Nintendo IPs - and Disaster is still in the works I do wish Nintendo would start bringing new IPs though, but they'll probably come once the old ones have been released, like mentioned in this thread.

What honestly makes you think that Nintendo isn't constantly pursuing new IPs?

I think you forgot Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play. This is the direction Nintendo is purusing with its "new IPs." They originally had Day of Disaster and Project H.A.M.M.E.R. too.

Here is what's confusing you:
Microsoft, who owns a lot of third parties (now called first-parties), produces very few new IPs. They systematically purchase anyone who sells well. This applies to Halo. Sony does the same thing. Nintendo has a true first-party development studio, as did SEGA. So when Nintendo produces a new IP it means they've found a game they think is fun enough to try and sell. That's a risk.

More importantly, when Nintendo innovates, it's very rarely just a new face, a new story, and a new name. That would be RFoM, that would be Uncharted, that would be almost every game listed.

Compare that to Wii fit. You know, just as a measure of "creativity."

Does Nintendo hate creativity?

Okay, now think about Wii Fit as a risk. What if it doesn't sell at all? It might not. But it might. But Nintendo seems pretty dedicated to going through with it, since they announced it at E3.

Does Nintendo take risks?

Do Microsoft or Sony try these things?

So then, how does a lack of new IPs mean a fear of risk? You realize Nintendo may be trying to cater to its ever-demanding hardcore crowd, while at the same time trying to woo non-gamers with the "Wii ___" franchises.

Damnit Argon, last post in the thread and you said exactly what I was going to say.

How is the Wii [insert word here] series of games not new IP? Nintendo are going in a different direction with their vision of IP development, just because it doesn't conform to this idea that IP = character/situation doesn't mean they're not pursuing new fields of play. You guys have got to be less narrow minded in your definitions.

it all depends on your POV, but it doesnt help that every time ninty tries to take a franchise in a new direction, people yell and holler about ninty defacing what such and such "should" be i.e. Sunshine and Wind Waker, both great games, but shunned by alot of people simply because they were a step outside the norm from what they expected from that franchise.

You ask the wrong question MotM

I totally agree with this, I will be flamed for what I'm about to say next but...
...Halo surely was new IP but still it was only a glamorized version of Doom/Quake

We shouldn't be asking for new IP we should be asking for new gaming ideas. Because seriously if a game has something fresh and new to bring to the table when it comes gameplay and the list goes on do you really care if it's the millionth incarnation of Mario or Link?

Play the original Super Mario Bros for NES for 1 hour. Then go play Super Mario Galaxy for 1 hour and what you will see the same IP but you can hardly claim it's the same game.

Of course you can bring examples like the Halo series where halo 1 and halo 3 basically are the same game *ducks into cover*
I know it's not fair to compare a IP that has had more than 25 years to evolve to halo but hell even the difference between SMB1 and SMB3 where big, even so the difference between SMB3 and SMW.

Still I don't mind playing Mario Golf also an example of same IP but different gameplay (don't even try to tell me that SMB and Nintendo Golf are the same ).

The industry needs new ideas more than it needs new IP.

Who cares if the IP is The Great Giana Sisters or Super Mario Bros if it's basically the same game (well at least the first level was (don't kill me Giana Sisters fans )).

thats a good line of thought spindel, but i for one do NOT want any more milking of the mario name. seriously, mario is associated with too many things right now. think about he has his core mario games, mario party, he is the chief sponsor of Smash, mario golf, mario tennis, mario soccer, mario paint, doctor mario, mario baseball, mario at the olympics, mario teaches typing, mario buy me because i have mario in the title even though im just a box of hot air. you see my point? there comes a time when its nice to have a new character.

I know what you mean webshark but I just need to underline my point.

The IP is not what needs development I mean if you have a complete game you could just toss out Mario or Link and replace them with a big dinosaur or whatever.

IP in the gaming world are just (in most instances) "artwork" and has very little to do with actual game mechanics, which in my opinion (this is a personal opinion and I don't try to pass it as the absolute truth or anything like that) is in much bigger need of a revamp than the actual IP in todays computer/video games.

EDIT:// Oh and BTW I have a great idea on how to make a Wii sequel to SMB2 using the motion controls in a great manner (totally off topic idea TBH). Wart needs a resurrection!!

I follow that with another question. Do you really consider the Wii ____ series actual games? I don't think of them as games at all. Wii Sports/Play were more tech demos then anything. Wii Fit doesn't even try to be a game, it trys to add functionality to draw in more users. The gamers that complain about Nintendo not coming out with new IP's are the ones who think the same as I do.
