It's intentional. They carried it over from MArio 64. The fact that it doesn't bother the majority doesn't mean it isn't a flaw. Today's games shouldn't have characters that 'drag their feet'.

Navi was there to help noobs know where to go. It's not a technical flaw like a control issue or camera.

We're talking about different issues here.

Zelda OOT is perfect. Even Nintendo fan's precious Metacritic says it's best ever.

You actually weren't going through the same levels entirely. Yes there is back tracking in Halo (obviously a result of development time), but it isn't enough for to stop playing the game. It keeps thinks interesting enough so that you won't stop. You did a couple of different things on your second way through the snow level.

@ bolded, no freaking way. "Halo killer" designates a different FPS that would be able to sell more than Halo (therefore "killing" it), not be better than it.

If you don't want to call things "flaws", maybe "weaknesses" are more appropriate. Either way, no game is perfect.
Those repeated levels are built into the story. You wanna have a go at backtracking, then look no further than Mario Galaxy, Metroid 3 and pretty much any 3D Zelda game.

I'm not nagging the games, but sometimes a 'repeated level' or backtracking is built into the story.

Now, in an FPS, you can't really TRAVEL to areas the way you can in adventure games, it goes against the style of the game, so they simply 'repeat' a level. It's no different than backtracking in Metroid, but no one seems to complain there.

Metroid 3 especially has more backtracking than I've seen in any game ever.

You just contradicted yourself. You say that navi was there to help, as intentional. If mario "drags" as you say they carried it down from 64, then it was intentional. according to you both can be annoying, and both aren't flaws.

So going back to a galaxy with a prankster comet isn't backtracking? SOme DO appear once you're in a different observatory.

The only people who wouldn't have to backtrack are the people NOT trying to get every star.

But Navi doesn't make the game sluggish, or cause you frustration, or even lose lives.

She's there to help you through the game. You're still looking at it wrong.

I don't think we (Dax included) are talking about the same thing here. I mean in the same level, I went through clones of the same room and passageways so many times it was nauseating in the course of about 15 minutes. It wasn't backtracking, it was the same thing over and over again, and it got boring. I wasn't even knocking backtracking, I don't really mind it that much as long as it's not excessive.

Oh, I thought you were talking about going through part of a level and then having to go back the way you came in the same mission.

In that case... yeah, there's some backtracking.

we've hit the brick wall moment of the discussion here. I don't think either party is getting thorugh.

Even in the same level. Isn't almost every corridor is Sky Town Elisia the same? There was a few moments where I lost where I was and had to check the map because the corridoors look familiar. I didn't have a problem with it, it's part what the art direction dictates, it's not a flaw, in EITHER game.
