Default Review scores!?

Major game review sites should not use the 1-10 point system anymore. Do you think they should change to a system where they give games like star ratings?

That way with only 5 or 10 (if they do half stars) possible choices for a score more people will READ the review.

What do you guys think?

Tenth topic about this, [but anyway] someone suggested before (I think I know who it was but I won't say incase I'm wrong) that a 4 tier ranking should be used;

Excellent
Good
Average
Bad

Makes perfect sense to me. The 8.8 versus 9.0 crap has got to stop, just like Tycho said [Wow I quoted PA like 4 times today];
"[We've been discussing] reviews and reviewers around here, but somewhere along the way I neglected to mention that their job is essentially impossible. The 7-9 scale they toil under is largely the result of an uneasy peace between the business and editorial wings of the venue."

Personally, I wouldn't base my opinions solely around a site as big as IGN or Gamespot, since they're so easily corruptible. I'd rather go to Metacritic to get the consensus, and look around some smaller sites. I'd say "I don't give a shit", but the drama that erupts from giving games like Twilight Princess an 8.8 is always so delicious and entertaining, it makes me hope that IGN and Gamespot continue to keep these systems. Although, it's likely that will stop now that Jeff is gone (the giving of controversial scores that is).

I dont think that there is really a good way to do it I do agree that the 8.8 8.9 9.0 system is kind of pointless because if you can tell the diff btw 8.8 and 9.0 your just lying to yourself however in a 5 pt scale the diff btw a 3 and 5 is enourmous that that doesnt work either.

Voted for 3rd option, 4th was tempting.

I dont think the 3rd option is viable some people just need to get right to the point rather than reading a whole review. How about this they should just rate games as BUY! or DONT BUY!.

God forbid someone has the patience to read for 2-4 minutes. They could spend that time doing important things like cooking hot pockets.

Actually, that would work (for me anyway). If something is labeled as 'BUY' or 'DON'T BUY', there's a good chance they'll be intrigued enough to find out the reasoning behind this decision, and as a result, read the review. Different people interpret point systems differently (and as a result, interpret someone's interpretation of the 100-point scale), so they can just look at it and make a decision. So yeah, I like the BUY/DON'T BUY idea. a RENT option would work too, since some great games have little replay value (and are short, for that matter).

That or, a 100 point number system with some actual logic and reasoning to it instead of picking numbers because they 'feel right'.

Yeah i did forget the rent option The point I was making is that you need both a score or a buy dont buy rent and a written review
