The reason why they blocked such devices flat out is because they can't distinguish between single player and online multiplayer. Nintendo has never really like such devices but after the affair with the original Game Genie hasn't had the motivation to go after them.

Don't the new "cheat" devices only allow you to use modded saves, as opposed to faffing around with the code that's already in the RAM?

Correct. All of the current systems now, even the DS and PSP, have protected memory. You can't just dynamically patch the memory to tweak things. The only thing these "devices" (some of them don't even qualify as that really) are now are fancy save game editors.

In that vein, it's worth keeping in mind that such devices are being blocked on all systems. The only odd thing here is that Nintendo's blocking a GC one. Though perhaps they were worried about a potential security breach from their GC mode to Wii mode?

Wolf could be right. I don't use cheat devices myself. I'd be afraid they'd fuck my games up. Don't wanna risk it.

Ok, I just checked, my gamecube freeloader doesn't work anymore.

THANKS A LOT, NINTENDO.

Wow, it took 20 years but they finally pissed me off.

I spent a LOT on my import copy of Megaman X Collection to find that the disc swapping trick doesn't work with that game (Does the disk swapping trick still work btw? Wow I hope so..) and then a bunch more on a freeloader so I could play it. (How foolish of me to try and own a legitimate copy of a game I wanted instead of just downloading the roms)

My gamecube died about a month before the wii came out (coincidence?) so I guess I have to return the game for less than half of what I bought it for, since I can't exactly be screwed formatting my wii and reinstalling the updates everytime I want to play Metroid.

WHY DISABLE GAMECUBE FREELOADERS? Thanks again Nintendo, for raping PAL territories as usual.

I'm sure I'll forgive you though.

With PSP I can use CW cheats and edit stuff dynamically. Of course it requires custom firmware but I can still do it. So, I imagine the "protected memory" is really only software?

Yep. It's normally implemented in the firmware side of things so if you can edit that you're likely to get around it.

People who cheat online deserve to be banned, however i dont have any problem with people cheating/patching saves offline.
