I mean, just the term 'FPS' denotes that it's a game where you shoot stuff from a first person view. Duck Hunt has all of those things.

Yes, I've played it, before you go asking...it came with my NES.

It's might be different from what a current FPS is, but by what FPS stands for Duck Hunt does very much qualify.

By the same logic, you could say Half-Life is a platformer because it contains platforms. You could say Dead Rising is a 3rd person shooter because you can shoot in third-person. You could say Mario is an action game because things happen. Heck, even in Mario Galaxy you can go into first-person mode and shoot star bits. FPS?

Would you put Duck Hunt in the same category as Doom or Carnival Games?

I've never even heard of a carnival game?

I mean, in all seriousness it's extremely hard to say that Duck Hunt is an FPS, but by the very definition, that's what it is.

Now, the other games you mention are predominantly "x" with "such and such" elements. Duck Hunt is the same thing over and over and over and over and......................

I would compare Duck Hunt more to Doom than I would Carnival Games, just because of the violent rage you can get while playing Duck Hunt. Stupid dog.

Lightgun game. That's the word I was thinking of. Games such as Time Crisis and RE: Umbrella Chronicles. Games where there's a huge focus on just blasting things on screen and you have little to no control over your character besides aiming and shooting or how you progress from one area to another. There is usually a co-op multiplayer mode.

FPS's, on the other hand, have a story, you have full control over your character, puzzle, platforming, or even RPG elements are usually added in, and a large focus is usually turned to competitive and online multiplayer.

Duck Hunt is a dumbed-down lightgun game. That's what I'd call it.
