True, but Sony needs to embrace the classic franchises too. I will admit that what got me hyped up most in the early stages of PS2 was Twisted Metal: Black, because Twisted Metal games are among my favorites. Granted, it was pretty good, and the best TM game at the time it was made, but it lacked that certain charm that TM2 had.

Sony will be in classic form in 08 though, we'll get SOCOM, Gran Turismo, Jak and Daxter probably, and such.

One thing I have noticed about Nintendo is that, pretty much all of their good original IPs, are different style of games. They aren't like Sony or Microsoft where they would have the same types of multiple franchises. Even if you look at within genre, F-Zero and Mario Kart play a LOT differently.

I think that's why Nintendo struggles to get new IPs, they've explored most of the genres already.

Downphoenix has a good point. New IPs are one thing, but when a new IP is basically the same thing as an established franchise with over 10 titles so far with only a few changes in the mechanics and gameplay. JRPGs come to mind, as well as FPS, heck even strategy games.

Just take the Warcraft (not to be confused with WoW), Starcraft and Age of Empire franchises... they are all basically the same thing: collect ressources, build your town/lair, grow an army, attack/defend...

Just take any WWII FPS franchises...

People rant about Zelda being the same thing over and over again: Zelda gets attacked/kidnapped by Ganondorf and Link comes to save the day. What would a new adventure IP be like? There's an ennemy, someone/the world is in danger, you're the hero who comes and save the day.... hmmm sounds vaguely familiar.

Without this, EA would never have a new IP.

Also, they give opportunities to try out things that wouldn't work within established series, whether gameplay mechanics or types of stories.
Quake is still Quake, no matter if you call it Halo1, 2, 3, Call of Duty 1, 2, 3, 4, Half-Life 1, 2 and Episode 2.

New IP != better games

EDIT:// I haven't read any further than the quoted post in this thread

ACTUALLY, when you look at it, the PS3's "old IPs" are hiding quietly in the shadows patiently, waiting for the PS3 to have an install base worthy of their next installment. MGS4, FFXIII, GTA? Mm? Why are they not already out and dominating the charts the same way SMG is? The truth of the matter is that the new IPs are just the people who Sony wooed in hopes of increasing sales, that were daring enough (hence a new IP) to try the PS3's waters.

I should then point you to God of War, before it got a sequel. To Gears of War, before it got a...trilogy? To Pikmin, before it got a sequel. You seem to have missed the fact that any game that has a sequel has to have done well before it was famous. I'm not sure you can so clearly divide gamers into the "sequel whores" and the "pioneers" so easily.
in another thread
Chibi stated that the original games of a series usually doesn't do as well as the sequels
you named a few ex. but most cases this is not true

and as for Gears
1.) it was extreamly hyped
2) it was a well known fact before it even came out that it was developed by Epic Games (the creators of the Unreal series)

Gears trilogy was already planned before release. The ending says so.
