If new games aren't hyped anywhere, nobody knows they exist, and don'y buy them. Bioshock had a sick hype train behind it, so it went pretty well.

It is but not always the case, Fifa has not always been a good game, some may argue it still isn't but its always hyped

That's so totally true. Take one particular Wii game for example: Zack & Wiki. It got praises from the gaming industry, the hardcore gamers who visit forums such as this one knew about it, but the general public probably never heard of it. The sales now reflected in the NPD thread reflect this fact well.

Of course I can't speak for other regions, but around here, we don't get many video game ads. I see 360 and Wii ads, sometimes DS ads, but I never saw a PS3 ad. That being said, the Nintendo ads I've seen were all for first party titles, while the 360 ads often advertise 3rd party games. Kudos to Microsoft for that one, if anything, it will make people buy the 360 version of a multiplat game since it's basically only advertised for the 360 around here.

Marketing and hype (or lack thereof) can make or break a game... though it doesn't make the games flop-proof either (Lair will always be a good example of this this gen).

Really you dont see many Ps3 adds ? in the UK there about 4 ongoing at the moment, and one 360 advert and one Wii Advert.

Here it's mostly 360 and PS3 ads that I see. See a Galaxy commercial very rarely and that's about it for the Wii. For the 360 regulars are Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and the one advertising the 360. For the PS3 there's the PS3 advertising one, Uncharted, and Ratchet and Clank as regulars.
