Starcraft 1 came out during the height of popularity of RTS games. It is likely the best selling RTS ever, as far as being a single game. I dont think Starcraft 2 will sell even a 3rd of the copies. A lot of people love Starcraft, yes, but the popularity of the RTS is waning, in fact I can see Civilization 5 doing almost as well as Starcraft 2, and that's a turn based strategy, and those games have LONG passed their heyday (like, before Civ 3 was even released). Plus there's the fact that Starcraft 2 barely has anything new. Starcraft 1, part of the reason it was so big back in its day, was because it was a pretty unique RTS. Starcraft 2 doesn't demonstrate any uniqueness over games already out on the market like Dawn of War or Supreme Commander. Im actually kinda disappointed in what they did with it, I was hoping they were gonna evolve the game like they did from Warcraft 2 to Warcraft 3.

It will also be hard to compare the sales of Starcraft 2 to the first. Starcraft is one of the best selling game on the PC, ever. It has it's extremely long life span to thank for that. I know Starcraft 2 will be successful, but you cant compare the sale figures until Starcraft 2 has been out for many years before it becomes a safe comparison. You very well may be right, but even if Starcraft 2 does only sell a third of the copies of Starcraft, if it does that in only a few years, we can call that a massive success.
