Well, I'm rather amazed. Sony should just drop all that other nonsense and stick with the Playstation brand because it obviously ain't doing them a lick of good. They have their hands in too many pots at once.

While expanding is good - it's not so good if it doesn't grow your business as well.

Their business is growing. As long as they're still making money, they're doing well enough. The difference between Sony and Nintendo? Sony will use their money to improve themselves. Nintendo will use it to sell you more plastic surfboards and Wii remote attachments.

Sony stretched itself too thin. Sony isn't as profitable as Nintendo though it makes more sales revenue and this says a lot.

"Making money" is good, of course, but as a large corporation you're always looking to outdo your competitors, not just "survive." Especially when stocks are on the line. I mean, where I work half of our conversations are about the competition.

I agree with your 2nd statement, but if it doesn't make you more money than your competitors then I don't see how it's worth it. I'd rather only have responsibility for 1 or 2 products that make a killing rather than 20 that do "ok". The one way in which having a diverse line can be beneficial is that one can make up for the other when something isn't doing so well.

It's easy to bump your profits when you're not doing anything with the money.

It also broadens their company's reputation. When someone thinks of Nintendo, they think of games. When they think of Sony, then think of a wide array of good products.

In this instance you're correct - because Sony has been around so long and has had so many "killer" products. I don't know that as of late their products have been see as "good" though, especially with other companies coming to the forefront that offer better customer service and overall quality (and of course the battery-explosion fiasco).

Like, LG is newer, but I'd take many of their products any day over Sony's. Their stuff is pretty kick ass. And Samsung has quickly overtaken Sony as the recognized leader in HDTV quality. Maybe it's because Sony's focus is in too many arenas? When they concentrated on a few products, those products were seen as top of the line. That's not the case anymore.

Sony has overstretched itself.

But they still have what it takes to survive.
