EA: PS3 will outsell 360

So apparently EA is thinks that the PS3 is going to start doing better than the 360 in 2008. Do you think this is true, and if it is true what implications could that have for future games? Mass Effect 2 or 3 a PS3 exclusive?

IGN: EA Predicts Wii Dominance to Continue

Electronic Arts has weighed in with its thoughts on how the console wars will play out with a recently released report that projects hardware sales for 2008. In what should be no surprise to anyone, EA estimates that the Nintendo Wii and DS will continue to lead the pack in sales for North America and Europe. The company further predicts the PS3 will move up to second place, relegating the Xbox 360 to last place in home console sales.

Things get slightly more interesting when you look at how EA predicts the hardware sales will break down by region. In North America, EA estimates that the PS3 and Xbox 360 will have roughly equivalent sales figures. However, the company believes the PS3 will dominate the Xbox 360 in Europe by a better than 2:1 ratio. Even the PS2 is expected to sell roughly on par with the Xbox 360 in that market.

Below are the number estimates, in millions of units, EA released for console and handheld sales in 2008.

North America
PS3: 4.5 - 5.5
Xbox 360: 4.5 -5.5
Nintendo Wii: 5.5 - 6.5
PS2: 2.2 - 2.7
Nintendo DS: 7.5 - 8.5
PSP: 3.5 - 4.5

Europe
PS3: 5.0 - 6.0
Xbox 360: 1.5 - 2.5
Nintendo Wii: 6.5 - 7.5
PS2: 1.7 - 2.2
Nintendo DS: 6.5 - 7.5
PSP: 2.5 - 3.5

I suppose it's possible. PS3 is gaining momentum and it has some big games coming up, like MGS4, LittleBigPlanet and GT5 - though there's always the likelihood of delays. Then again, 360 has it's share of games coming as well... I'd still say 360, but the PS3 should definitely do much better than it's inaugural year.

The ps3 will gain more and more users. but theres still a big gap.

You never know. Things change, 360 could drop of the face of the earth, the price could drop far below the PS3. PS3 could have its Red Ring issue, many variables are there. Not to mention that now that the PS3 is at a more affordable price its a no brainer that more people are starting to purchase it.


dz06lt, if you go by rothbarts theory, then the 360 had a stronger 1st year then the PS3's first year and a slower 2nd year... so lets see how the PS3 does its second year.

Remember that buyers happen with release, then again at every major price drop, with mass market at the $199 level. Earlier adopters (first couple years hardly count for much of the total of most consoles)

I doubt that MS is going to win this go around.... I still feel they will come in 2nd, but you never know.

So true but what the PS3 has going for it in year 2 that the 360 didnt is the millions of americans who still have PS2's and are just waiting to make the jump. I believe this will be the year many do finally convert but we shall see

I think that's what hurt Microsoft more than anything, although the PS2 owners didn't make the jump to PS3, they didn't make the jump to 360 either. Getting the same type of audience that bought the XBox last gen isn't good enough, Microsoft may appeal to the hardcore gamer, but that's exactly their problem.

It's okay Phoenix, and all the other 360 supporters. Lets just enjoy our 360 while we can. Everyone should get a PS3, it will be lasting longer. I guess that thing about "paying for a future investment" was true.

not really sure about the outselling part...
I'm sure PS3 will sell well this year...as long as the games sell on time and with little to no delays, anythings possible!
