Gaming is as good as its ever been, overall the quality of games today are on par or even better sometimes than with previous generations. The market is growing too big though, and faster than we the consumer can accomidate. We're heading for another video game crash, but not as severe as what we experienced prior to the NES. Interest in gaming won't dwindle, but because of the industry constantly raising the bar, we have started to grow more picky and demanding of what we want in games.

Soon, within the next 2 years I predict, I think there will actually be a lessening of game purchases (in the major markets) as we expect more quality and lasting play from our games, since we are paying more now and the studios are putting more into the games.

The wii will be lucky in this and take 1st place, as we realize that what we want most from games is pure entertainment. Graphics are getting less and less impressive as well as features of games, so the core play mechanics will sooner or later be what we are most concerned about. I dont think studios will scale back (much) on their efforts of presentation and graphics, but they will realize that this is impressing us less and less, and will have to beef up another part of their game instead to ensure strong sales and a positive lasting impression on us.

Graphics will have a lessened role in future games, meaning that more emphasis will be played on core gameplay elements like controls and the fluidness of the gameplay. The jump in graphics just is not what it used to be. I remember when I first played Sega Genesis, the graphics were just mind blowing in comparison to NES. When I play 360 nowadays, the graphics in comparison to PS2 or XBOX on an SD TV isn't near as noticeable as that though, I can't really appreciate the graphics of 360 without playing on an HD TV. And the next gen after that will stand out even less. I see MS and Sony adopting policies similar to Nintendo in the next gen, not necessarily with motion controls so much, but with making sure that the technology is affordable enough from the getgo to have a strong start to increase the chances of a strong finish. And gaming hardware I can see will be sticking around for longer as well due to the upcoming gaming recession, I wont be surprised if the 360s 1st party support lifespan will be double that of the original XBOX, and Sony will remain with its tradition of providing at least 7 years of solid 1st party support.
