No sarcasm, I pondered the thought for a good 5, 6 minutes.

Shit I had the same bored feeling when I clicked on to NGW just now, and your post only bored me further.

If you seriously sat there in the post reply screen for that long, then you have some rethinking to do about gaming in general.

Games need to go back to NES and SNES.

If they released games like Assassin's Creed on SNES or Mario Galaxy on NES, I would play.

I agree with this 100%, because in many games this would mean you actually have to think ahead, play more careful and maybe be economical with ammo/MP/HP or what ever else you have that might be used up.

And I will probably be flamed to hell and back for what I will say next:

The two singlehandedly most over-hyped franchises in gaming history are Half-Life and Halo.

Halo, while by no means a bad game/franchise, is not great didn't bring anything new to the FPS market. Compared to other FPSs in general it was/is a mediocre FPS at best.
What Halo 1 was, when it was released, was the best FPS for a console, it wiped it's console competition but still compared to the more FPS friendly PC market it still was mediocre compared to other games at the time.

Half-Life have lived off hype since day 1. Nothing in the first game was original or ground braking, even the graphics weren't that good at it's release. All the "interactivity" with other characters could be found in other games before that and wasn't exclusive to HL1. And the maps aren't as "non linear" as some people have tried to make them out to be. The story has about as much depth as original Doom story (not much at all that is), "researchers open portal to other dimension, ailiens/deamons flood research facility, protagonist needs to fix it and end up in another dimension" very original (I was sarcastic if you missed it when i called the story "very original").
Half-Life 2 was even worse , hype-wise. Once again "old" graphics at it's release, it uses a lot of shaders and has nice textures but geometry wise the levels have less geometry than games using the old Unreal Engine 2. Physics where nice but still a gimmick and except for eye-candy wouldn't change gameplay at all (other than some puzzel that feels more like an after thought). (I haven't touched the episodes in HL2 so I will not comment on them).

I actually dare to say that the only reason HL2 has the phenomenal sales figures it has, is not because it's so good. It's because it's so fucking over-hyped people like it just because they think they should. (HL1 has CS to thank for its phenomenal sales (and CS was something new in terms of online/LAN multiplayer back in the days (I played it from Beta 5 to v1.3 )). If there had been no CS HL1 probably would be long forgotten now and also HL2 would just be another sequel among others)

I know I will probably be burned at a stake for saying these things so I guess I'll go away and stand in a corner alone now.

But of course then we would bitch about not being able to save.

The biggest problem with gaming right now. People not knowing how good we have it these days... there was once a time that maybe 2 decent games would be released per system per year.. now we get more then that although we have to sort though the shovelware to know whats what.

Then: The average game back then was 4 hours long at best.
Now: the average game is 9-15 hours. (RPG's break this big time though) Then: The average amount of decent games per year... 2.
Now: 5-6 decent games per year.
Then: Friends had to come over to play (unless you had the atari modem)
Now: You can play against people all over the world.

Seriously I think a lot of people need to put down the controller and go outside once in awhile... spread the game out.... oh and play every mission in the game, they may be side missions but they are part of the game.... I love it when people complain a game was short but they only did the main quest/mission/whatever. Also if Normal skill is too easy go up a few levels.
Except for the "5-6 decent games per year" statement, I agree.

We get 5-6 INCREDIBLE games a year, not 5-6 decent ones.

As far as decent games go, we probably get 20+ a year per system.

Stop bitching gaming is better than ever! There's at least one decent/good game released almost every month, and some great AAA titles each year! Oh and if you want to play games that's much like games from the old days then there's always flash!
