I don't think there is a best way to tell a storyline. Half-Life has one of my favorite stories, with no out-of-character-ness at all. Everything is a 1st person point of view.

Then you have Mass Effect, another game I love, which is all about cutscenes.

HL has a great story?!

You got to be kidding me!

Let's see:

Scientist conduct experiment.
Experiment goes wrong and opens a rift to another dimension.
Scientist/action hero dude goes to save the day.

Just for kicks let's compare this story with original Dooms story:

Dodgy company conducts experiments.
Experiment goes wrong opens a rift to another dimension.
Action hero dude goes to save the day.

Gears campaign is awsome. That's a great story.

Half-Life was a tough one, I missed a few points every now and then because of the "go where you want all the time" cutscenes.

Where's the love for The Darkness? Yeah the gameplay was a little repetitive but the story was great with some good twists, really if the story wasn't that good in The Darkness I probably would've skipped it.

It's not about the main headlines in a story that counts, it all comes down to how you manage to take use of twists and turns, just look at all of those who said Mass Effect was a Halo rip off just because it shared some of the main headlines.

As long as most of the story is not told during gameplay...
I mean, I don't mind a few seconds of dialogue but usually while i'm playing I sometimes forget about whats going on and instead focusing on how i"m supposed to get thru the level or stage...

Uh... In essense all stories follow a similar structure. What makes a good story different to a bad story is how it is told and fleshed out, something that HL has done very well and Doom didn't do.

That doesn't make sense. Do you feel that way in real life then? If so I think you have problems with reality.

For me Lost Odyssey shows exactly how a good story is told in a game. Wonderfully voiced cutscenes, fluid story telling and brilliantly written snickets of the character's pasts. It's definitly some of the best story telling I've seen this gen.

Now I definately can't get Brawl until I've played the first game at least.
