Exclamation Brawl not working on some wiis???

so apparently not all wii's can play brawl.

Smash Bros. Brawl not working on some Wiis, Nintendo responds - Joystiq

nintendo is claiming that the problem must be that we have dirty wii's, and that we need to send them in to them to get them 'cleaned.'

from what was said on irc, apparently this is the first wii game to be dual layered. and that the wii is, in fact, NOT ready to read a DL disc. the game is said to come with an update on it that allows the wii to read DL content.

here is a not particularly legitimate source for the DL update GameSpot Forums - Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Heard about Dual Layer Disc Issues

anyways, does anyone think this is pretty stupid on ninty's part? this is something that the wii should have been able to do from day one and even if it didnt, they have periodic updates every month or so, so they could have easily added a DL update to the wii then. they had to have known that brawl was going to be DL for quite some time now, one would think that they would have been more ready for something like this. not to mention that something like this should have NEVER happened.

discuss.

I honestly dont see why they would forgo duallayer drive.... I mean, even my 2000 Panasonic DVD player reads DL DVD's. If they in fact did then this is a HUGE screw up to them.... we may not NEED bluray this generation but we do need more then single layer DVD.

Send them in for a laser clean?

Ha, sounds to me like some Wiis have a crappy laser that can't read dual layer discs and they're going to replace the lasers.

Are you kidding me?

This is massive. Seriously.. why for any reason should the Wii not read DL Discs. Why should people be without their Wii's for a few weeks just to play 1 game.

Its nothing on the scale of the horrible RRoD... but this is most definately a fail on Nintendos part if they in fact did screw this up with cheap parts inside their system

Not an issue. It's a small problem for people who don't treat it right.

This is straight from Nintendo's repair form:

Quote:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.)
It's been years since I've come across a drive that couldn't read a DL DVD properly. Is this Nintendo being cheap in production, or is the Brawl disk unnaturally densely packed??
