I'll tell you this...if it has UMD, it fails. First of all, it needs to be much smaller than the PSP for anyone to consider it as a phone. This puts some constraint on battery size (plus the fact that you need phone components). The PSP took enough crap for bad battery life, so imagine if you also added phone time to drain the battery. It has to be solid state media or it fails. Of course, this means they'll undoubtedly go with Memory Stick, which is annoying as hell. SD is clearly the media format of choice. Second, they have to get the carrier issue right. Apple seems to have retained a fair amount of control over the iPhone (well...they are control freaks), but being AT&T exclusive eliminates a big chunk of the market. Problem is that Verizon, which is the best in terms of phone call service in the US, is also a bit of a control freak and would likely look to strip out Sony features in favor of their proprietary services (like they've done in the past).

Now let's get to the games. Hardcore games like Metal Gear and the like are not going to attract the non-gamer cell phone user. They're more into the quick puzzle games and such on their phones. And then of course the gamer may not actually have the provider that carries the device. One huge issue would be the controls. I've yet to see a compelling gaming setup on a cell phone...one that you would actually want to play real games on.
