Default SonyEricsson files patent for a gaming phone

Ok don't know how much news this is but I just read the article on a swedish site. The article feels kind of odd since it states that the patent was filed (god this word is wrong but I can't recall what it is supposed to be I hope you understand what I mean) in 2006 in the US but here it goes anyway.

The text below is translated from swedish (by me) the source in the link is in swedish

Quote:
Sony Ericsson has filed a patent for a new gaming phone that indicates that Sonys PSP is heading towards mobile phones.

It is the tech site Register Hardware that claims to have gotten hold of the patent request and say that the phone has a large touch sensitive display and functions that reminds of Sonys PSP.

The request for the patent was filed in 2006 in USA. Nither Ericsson or Sony want to leave any comments regarding this

Old news.

I've spoke of the rumored Playstation Phone before.

It is coming, though probably not for a little while.

I've heard about the PSP phone before, but never seen pictures before:

Gaming mode...

Quote:
a device that consists of just a large touchscreen with a built-in accelerometer that allows it to reformat its GUI horizontally or vertically depending on which way it's held. Several operating modes are mentioned, such as phone mode, web-browser mode and music player mode. When held horizontally, the unit goes into game mode and mimics “the look and feel of the popular Sony PlayStation Portable gaming device” by displaying touch-sensitive PSP controls at either end.

Phone mode.

So, a big touch screen that emulates several different interfaces(modes) with an accelerometer.

Why even bother with old phone interfaces. fairly pointless IMO.

bluettooth headsets required and touch screen technology. Or slightly less effecitve, just use the d pad to dial (have a cursor select numbers on screen with the DPad and the A button to "press that button").

edit: I guess the requirement of bluetooth headsets wouldn't be necessary.

I would have considered in the past. My wife's most recent phone is a w810 Sony Ericson. It works well for most stuff but has a few quirks. 1. Sony's proprietary head phone jack. 2. Sony's proprietary charging plug instead of being USB compatible. 3. The file transfer interface is horrible and not easy to use.

Walkman phones should be plug and play. I should be able to drag files over and be done with it. This phone is not that simple.

Most manufacturers love proprietary jacks.

That sounds strange, I have a SE K550i and I just plug in the USB cable and the phone appears as a memorystick/external drive and i can just drag and drop files into it (this includes music files that I can later play (if it wheren't for my iPod which I use for music)). At least this works like this under Linux.

And it's something consumers should not stand for.

Chibi hated the Ericsson phones

Chibi had 2 and they both crapped out right after the warranty wore off, the same for a friend
they sent him an upgraded one which did the same thing eventually
