Sony: PS3 MMO Could Rival World of Warcraft

Wow is pretty much unstoppable.

The only way this could overtake Wow is if it came out in LATE portion of PS3s life cycle (2010 and beyond) because there will either be a WOW2 or Blizz will have a new MMO by then that will start leeching from Wow's playerbase, plus Sony may have a respectably large playerbase by then on the PS3 that could even allow for the potential sales.

WoW only has around 10 million current subscribers, but is a fairly old game in terms of a lot of things. Have they ever upgraded it? (I don't mean expanded, but actual upgrades to take advantage of more powerful technologies)

The PS3 could in the same amount of time WoW has had put a product to market that will do what WoW has. Will it compete? Probably not for 5-7 years, which is the lifespan of a console. However, if done right, the game might be able to be transitioned (ie, the PS4 will have the same basic game with improved graphics)

WoW can't be upgraded because it'll kill half of the userbase that use laptops or older hardware. Besides, WoW has a very specific art style that has been achieved with the current technology.

They can just do like they did with Everquest and not make the upgraded engine a requirement. Though people using the old version will see textures and such being reused instead of new textures for new environments, for instance.

new textures in new environments would be to extend it, not upgrade. Which they've done. And will do again. I guess they'll add shaders, resolutions and other optional effects with patches.
