Nintendo: What Wii Hype Shortage Ploy? Huh?

Quote:
intendo uses forced shortages to create hype? Oh, that's rich. Why would Nintendo ever do that? Points out Nintendo's Dervin Camden:

The fact is that we have put far more product on store shelves worldwide than our competitors. The difference is that in a very short time we have far outpaced their total sales... There is no benefit to Nintendo in not having enough product on the shelves to allow everyone who wants one to be able to buy one, which begs the question, 'Why don't you just make more?' Please understand that the Wii console is a complex electronic device featuring one-of-a-kind components from different suppliers around the world. Many things factor into our being able to effectively increase assembly and shipment of a product without compromising quality control.
Exactly. I mean, if the Wii was hard to get and the demand for it was huge, why would that ever benefit Nintendo?

It has long annoyed me when people still said Nintendo reduced supply to create hype. Although this could be a good trick when a product is first launched. After 6 months it's just stupid to delay stock to potential customers.

I know someone who bought their kids a PS3 for Christmas because they couldn't get a Wii.

Ms got caught out doing that simply for 'sold out' headlines shortly after launch. Nintendo has been selling out in lots of places ever since, i guess those who are still trying to push the issue are those feeling a little scorned/embarassed.

Most of the stores I've been in the last couple of weeks have had lot's of Wii's sitting there.

They'd be fools to hold back supply, there could be exceptions such as preparing for the launch of a major title but other then that there is no benefit. I can honestly say I've hardly ever seen the Wii sold out at any store here in Australia, the other day I walked past a stack of Wii's sitting next to a stack of PS2's and thought "I bet the US would love this". (Nearly bought one to, but then I stopped for a sec and thought about and it seems that the only games I want on it I already have on my N64)

They're starting to appear on shelves again in my area, granted, they still sell out the very day they come in.. but still, demand for it here has dropped.
Also, I agree with lenny.

Well considering they've sold 700k+ for the past 2 months I doubt they are holding back much supply.
