Apple is jumping back into the gaming business. Buoyed by the huge interest in bringing games to its iPhone product, Apple is now preparing to add full fledged gaming to its Apple TV product and distribute the games via iTunes ala Valve. Apple sees their potential to be the hub on home entertainment being threatened by the Xbox 360 and PS3. This is also a pushback against Valve which is rumoured to be interested in video and music distribution.
SONY and MS should be VERY worried.
Pic is obviously fake. But I personally believe that Apple will enter a console contestant or streamline their coputers to have console like features (after all specs in Macs and iPhones iPods don't shift at the same rate as PC HW)

interesting. I'm pretty confident Apple will enter the gaming market and I think it's only a matter of time before we get confirmation of this. Only problem is that I doubt Apple will be into making 'hardcore' games and will rather make a lot of caual games much like a lot fo what's coming out on the Wii at the moment

I would actually be surprised if we didn't hear anything about it on the WWDC (June 9-13)

I'd love to see Apple enter the video game console wars, as long as they manage to come up with something ground breaking and profitable, Apple can't afford a losing product.

The reality though, seems a little bit different, I don't think they'll go beyond the iPhone in gaming. There still remains a possibility of Apple TV games as an added functionality, after all Apple TV has Mac OS X, and runs on Intel processors just like any other Mac, so any Mac game can be easily run on Apple TV. Apple TV is a stripped down Mac, so they might need to up the specs a little (a lot).

AdmittedlyMac OS X doesn't have a lot of games but some of the more popular PC games are also available on the Mac.

With the slowing down US economy, it might not be in Apple's best interest to get into a cut throat market that (other than Nintendo) no one is making considerable profits on. Sony and Microsoft have the deep wallets and are diversified to handle a lose in their gaming division, Apple isn't.

So, I don't think Apple will have anything about gaming (unless it is iPhone) in WWDC this year, what I'm really waiting for is a new MacBook Pro, because I'm planning on getting myself one.

Apple makes loads of money! It can easily afford a loss on entering the gaming market.

Apple makes money because it spends money making its products better and better. If they spend money trying to get into a cut throat market, they wont have money to spend on making their products better, and will end up losing even more money. The only reason Apple is 5 years ahead of everyone else in computer hardware, is that they are focused on their core market, and continuously improve their lineup.
