IGN: Nintendo to Unveil 'Core' Titles at E3

UK, June 17, 2008 - Nintendo could be unveiling several games for the Wii that will appear to its core fan base at this year's E3, according to comments from a company spokesperson.

Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo, told GamePro "…we will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3."

Sure to whip the flames of internet speculation into a veritable inferno, there are no precise details on what the titles may be, though a return to a classic franchise could possibly take the shape of the much rumoured Kid Icarus retread or a truly bespoke new Zelda adventure for the Wii - but don't shoot us if it's neither.

Franklin alluded to the console's fan base, telling GamePro that "The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers."

The recent release of Okami for the Wii, as well as the unveiling of the Frank Miller tinged Mad World from Sega and Platinum Games also suggest a shift in publisher's attitudes to the system, with Franklin noting that "They realize that Wii is the current platform of choice in this generation, and their bottom lines depend on appealing to the largest base."

Hopefully they have the same definition of 'core' as we do...

Anyway, I thought Nintendo didn't make distinctions between core and casual gamers? Or was that just execs talking shit again?

they are most likely meaning their core demographic - which is everyone!

Great list AkaneJones. Although the only one I disagree with is Zelda, we know that Nintendo have been working on a Zelda title for the Wii for ages as Twilight Princess was supposed to be GC only. A Zelda title will be mentioned i'm sure!

If Nintendo doesn't announce Wii Punch Out!! then regardless of what else they announce there will be no way they can be considered the winners at E3.

Yah but that's where I think a lot of people are confused. Nintendo just released a new Zelda last year called Phantom Hourglass. Expecting a new Zelda this year is a bit crazy, if one is announced it would more like be a '09 game. Ofcourse all bets are off if they make a New Four Swords on-line, or something like Tetra's Tacker and that Tingle game.

I also don't see why people are obsessed with Punch-out. I can't see how to expand the game enough that it's more than a Wiiware title, unless they cram other stuff on there like Duck Hunt.

Super Punch Out!! is likely a game that would appear in my personal all time top 10 list of games. It may not be as deep as some other games but it's still one that I keep going back to just because of the pure fun involved. Pretty much from the first time I played Wii Sports boxing I thought that Punch Out!! should be making an appearance on the Wii. Just as long as it doesn't suck as much as Wii Sports boxing did. The boxing in Wii Fit has given me hope again that Punch Out!! could be great on the Wii.
