Default Latest study once again proves that gaming is bad

Are video games better than a night with the spouse? | Sympatico / MSN News

A new study has found that when young adults play video games, their relationships with friends and family suffer.
According to a study conducted by researchers from Brigham Young University, the more college students play video games, the more strain it puts on their relationships with their parents, significant others and friends.
"It may be that young adults remove themselves from important social settings to play video games, or that people who already struggle with relationships are trying to find other ways to spend their time," study author Laura Walker said in a statement. "My guess is that it's some of both and becomes circular."
Interestingly, the researchers found that women who reported high use of video games had low self esteem.
The study, published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, surveyed more than 800 college students.
The researchers asked their subjects about how often they play video games, as well as a number of questions about the quality of their relationships, including how much time, trust, support and affection they share with friends and family members.
They also found that the more frequently subjects played video games, the more likely they were to be involved in risky behaviours, such as drinking and drug abuse.
Those who played video games on a daily basis reported that they smoked marijuana nearly twice as often as subjects who only occasionally played video games, and three times as often as those who never play.
Alex Jensen, a Brigham Young undergraduate student who also led the study, said he would like to next research how video game use affects young couples.
This study found that nearly three-fourths of the male subjects played video games regularly, but only 17 per cent of females reported playing more than once a month.
In a statement Jensen said: "The gender imbalance begs the question of whether chasing a new high score beats spending quality time with a girlfriend or wife."
So everyone put down your marijuana and chase your family instead of chasing that high score.

I have friends who game, and we game together...i've met my fair share of lady gamers rawr...and my mom and dad both played Wii sports with my sister and me for a full day if that counts....otherwise this report seems fail!!

I wonder if they even considered the possibility that all the marijuana their test subjects smoked was the problem and not video games?

I used to have the occasional family game session back in the day. The 4 of us once spent a whole afternoon playing Gauntlet 2 on the NES, and my dad was almost always up for some Goldeneye multiplayer.
