Default The PS3 and 360 add more to games than just pretty graphics

Developer: Wii isn’t Next-Gen - WII News from The Game Reviews

Quote:
Out of all of the versions of the original Godfather video game, The Wii version had the best critical reception out of the three. So when EA announced that there would be a sequel, it seemed like a no-brainer that there would be a Wii version planned.

But as it turns out, EA is not planning to release a ported version to the Wii this time. While talking to TheGameReviews.com, Godfather II Producer Dave Woldman explained to us that in order to reach their vision for this game they needed to harness the power of true next generation machines.

“We felt that in order to truly deliver on the vision of The Godfather II we really had to focus and take advantage of what the next gen hardware has to offer, including online connectivity. The next gen hardware is simply more robust and allows for a higher visual bar and immersive experience.

“A next gen hardware focus enables higher-resolution textures, longer draw distances, and better frame-rates. But we also harnessed the power of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 to make gameplay improvements as well. We were able to create an all new Artificial Intelligence system to make our characters act and react more intelligently.”

The absence of one multiplatform game from the Wii lineup isn’t going to topple Nintendo’s empire. However, one must wonder how long Wii owners will be willing to watch the other systems get all of the big name releases that never show up on their system of choice.
A game developer saying that the the PS3 and 360 can make for a more immersive game experience than the Wii can? They're actually daring to say that better graphics and AI can draw you into a game more than waggling a controller can?

Immersion does take advantage of all senses, and sight is a pretty important sense in this respect.

So, I'll give them a point (But they better have a good game underneath!)

Shhh!! The Wii fanboys will hear you. And you know they can't admit or accept the fact that graphics can add a lot more to a game than just make it look pretty.

explain how?

isn't that a little contradictory? the wii godfather WAS the best one, and it's due exclusively to the controls- this next one (and re5, while we're at it) is a step back

moreso, the majority of my favourite games are 2d--

how many high profile flops have come out in the last two years? force unleashed syndrome = shitty games with shitty gamplay, the graphical gap [ala polycount] between gamecube/ps3 graphics isn't nearly as much of a big deal anymore [and apparently wasn't in previous gens, since nintendo was schooling til now], especially when it comes to economics

jeez that comment was so lame boff

seriously

the era of boasting how much money you can funnel into a games graphics is dead, one would think ea would be a little smarter than this by now-- im betting this game will flop too

ps; ea are idiots lol

godfather2wii would be the highest seller with lowest req. budget of any theoretical wii//ps3/360 matchup [and probably the better game; let's look at godfatherone for a sec;

360

=\

Wii

now you're playing with power

the shooting in that game was unreal, the boxing/choking/dragging to oven stuff was just icing

the people are clearly not speaking here

I'll use games such as Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, and MGS4 as examples here. All three of them have great environments that look all pretty and fancy but they do a lot more than just that. They make the world around you more a part of the game even though you never directly interact with them. Atmosphere and mood can be heightened just by what's going on around the character.

I'm not saying that this hurts Wii games, or any games from past gen consoles as a fun game will be fun regardless of what it looks like but fancy graphics can add a lot more to a game than hardcore Wii supporters will ever give them credit for. In the end, like everything it comes down to personal opinion and to me feeling like you're almost a part of the world around you makes a game feel more immersive than flicking my wrist instead of pushing a button.

you're not giving the wii controller credit where's it due

i can appreciate graphics

mirrors edge looks insane

but fancy backgrounds don't make a killer game// and the economic expense [waste] is hurting gaming-- when did the last SSS++ platinum console game come out? like last gen hey

I'm not saying that all Wii games involve little more than flicking your wrist to do something. I'm just saying there are those out there that will have you believe that any sort of waggle control instantly makes a game more immersive. Yes there are some Wii games out there that use the Wiimote to their advantage. There are also some out there where it adds nothing to the game whatsoever.

And I agree that putting great graphics on a bad game doesn't make it suddenly become a good game. However a very good game can become a great game if it uses graphics to it's advantage. Look at GTA4. I'm a GTA fan and have enjoyed the GTA forumla over the years. No way I would have given it close to a 10 because it still felt too much like the last ones, but it did get a lot of 10's from reviewers. And what was the one thing that almost every review seemed to base their 10 on? The fact that Liberty City felt like an actual living, breathing city, which is something I do agree with. A game that probably deserved a score in the high 8's or low 9's was made that much better in the eyes of many just because of those fancy backgrounds.
