Exclamation EA vs Take-Two: The Showdown!

yeah, so i have been seeing articles about this forever and i was wondering why we dont have a thread for it. so now we do

anyways, as you all ought to know by now, EA is REALLY wanting to absorb T2 right now. after their original offer that was declined, now EA is going for the Hostile Takeover route by appealing directly to the shareholders and offering a cool $26 a share.

i was going to link to some of the pertinent articles on this, but i figure it would just be easier to link to every kotaku article tagged "Take-Two" there are a couple in there about GTA and whatnot, but the vast majority are in one way or another about EA vs. Take-Two. Take-Two - Kotaku

this whole issue also deals alot with the EA console thread, because the possibility of an EA console is getting more and more real with each major buyout.

seriously one would think that there would be some anti-trust or monopolization suits being filed soon. they were the biggest publisher a year ago, and now they have taken over Bioware, they are closing in on T2 (which is one of the biggest publishers around) and they have the power to do a hostile takeover of Ubisoft.

so what are our thoughts about this? think EA will get them and kill off whatever was good about T2 the way they have with countless other companies (RIP westwood, we will never forget)? Will they take over the gaming industry and drive it into the ground with yearly rehashes of the same game until we cannot stand to play games anymore? is this their real goal because they are they in league with Jack Thompson (im sure Leon would support this conspiracy theory)?

one thing is for sure, only time will tell, and until then its getting gamers everywhere a little nervous.

This news makes me truly sad. It could drive me out of gaming for good.

Those of you who have seen EA decline over the years in favor of money and greed would agree. Why would we want the Wal-Mart of video games to be the biggest player by far in the industry?

Not by EA we don't. Dude, I've been playing games for 25-30 years and have seen all companies strive to make better and better games each year, except EA. I don't feel the way I do for no reason...EA will turn the entire industry to shit if given the opportunity.

Seriously, over the last few years, think of the most epic games we've had. Now think of how many of those came from EA, the largest (until now, that is) manufacturer of video games on the planet. They have almost no top-tier titles and yet they create the most # of games.

Their games aren't complete crap, but the word "mediocre" comes to mind. That's the kind of world you're looking at - one filled with mediocrity.

Generals was crap, but they sort of redeemed themselves with C&C3, still Red Alert 2 is my favorite.

Excuse my French, but I think I've actually had it. I'm at the end of my rope.

I know RA2 was last before EA, but never knew that the original team left to Petroglyph. I might go buy me one of their games

Westwood Studios - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
In August 1998, Westwood was acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) for $122.5 million in cash, and at the time Westwood had 5% to 6% of the PC game market.[1]. In response to what was perceived as an unwillingness to maintain the Westwood brand and independence from EA, many long-time employees quit over the next few years.
Along with Westwood, EA had also acquired a development studio in Irvine, California. It was managed by Westwood and became known as Westwood Pacific (later EA Pacific). Westwood Pacific developed or co-developed games like Nox and the Command & Conquer sequel Red Alert 2.
One of the last games released by Westwood, Command & Conquer: Renegade (an action game which mixed elements from first-person shooters and real-time strategy games) failed to meet consumer expectations and commercial goals Westwood and EA had set for it. In March of 2003, Westwood Studios (along with EA Pacific) was liquidated by EA and all willing staff were assimilated into EA Los Angeles. At the time of its closure, Westwood employed more than 100 people. Their last game was the MMORPG Earth & Beyond.
Some time after the closing of Westwood Studios, a new game studio, Petroglyph, was formed consisting mainly of former Westwood employees.
Petroglyph Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
Petroglyph Games is a video game developer based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company was formed by a group of former Westwood Studios employees who had resigned when Electronic Arts merged Westwood Studios into the EA Pacific studios in Los Angeles to form EA Los Angeles. Other former Westwood employees initially accepted EA's relocation offer, but eventually returned to Las Vegas to work with Petroglyph. Coincidentally, the old Westwood Studios building is not that far away from the current Petroglyph building.
Petroglyph is primarily known for their strong experience in RTS game development. The company's founding members have worked on seminal and influential games in the genre, most notably Command & Conquer and Dune II, which established the template for modern RTS games. Petroglyph Games' employees average more than 12 years of industry experience.
even tho they all left and started a new company. EA ruined them. they were one of the dominant RTS makers on the market, EA took them and their reputation, dragged them through the mud, then tortured and killed them both. petroglyph is a valiant attempt at continuing on at what they were best at, but they have neither the reputation, size or funding to do much at this point. evidenced by the fact that they have made a grand total of 2 games since 2003.

i actually bought Star Wars: Empire at War, might have been the last RTS game ive ever bought. i couldnt get into it too much tho. it was the kind of game that you really had to sit down and play with no distractions and get really into it if you were going to do well, and i just didnt have the time.
