I agree that GTA is a Playstation game to most people, but that's because previous GTA games were timed exclusives for PS2. As you know, that's not the case anymore.

I still think GTAIV will eventually sell more units on PS3, but I expect the difference to nowhere near as big as last gen.
While true, there's enough history there for the casual audience to consider it a PlayStation franchise, similar to Devil May Cry. People are familiar with it on one brand and they stick to that.

I've heard two people say they're buying a PS3 just for GTAIV... one of which already owns a 360.

I totally agree with you. All I'm saying is the difference between GTA units sold on Playstation vs. Xbox won't be anywhere near last gen. I expect GTAIV to sell very well on 360 because it's releasing at the same date, and because the 360 is much more affordable (especially in Europe, where GTA has a big fanbase.)

Oh, don't worry, I agree with you (except, GTA being popular in Europe along with PS3 being popular in Europe will probably mean it will be PS3 in Europe, but 360 in US, that's what I'm calling anyway).

No, he's not, but maybe that's a view others have... maybe it's just his excuse to get a PS3.

Right now the PS3 is still more expensive than the 360. Most people have 360s. GTA has online. I'm willing to bet that "casuals" don't care to much about the console. PS3 is expensive, 360 is less expensive, they can play online with their friends who already have 360s.

It just seems like the logical choice.
No, "most people" don't have 360s. As much as some people around here won't admit it, "most people" don't own a Wii either. Most gamers from generation six (100+ million PS2s plus 25-30 million Xbox and GameCubes each) haven't picked up any of the new consoles yet.

"More people" have 360s than PS3s in North America, but if "most people" had 360s, then who the heck is buying PS2s in such ungodly numbers month in and month out?

The price differential between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 isn't so large that it's going to make or break a purchasing decision in North America. If we talk about the 360 Pro, the price differential is less than the price of a single game ($50). Factor in one year of Live membership and you're back to even. If we're talking about the 360 Arcade... does anyone really buy this monstrosity? By the time you outfit it with the HDD you need to get the "exclusive downloadable content", your back at the price of a PS3.

I'm not suggesting that the numbers will be a landslide victory for the PS3, but it seems to me like Microsoft is expecting that the majority of hardware sales explicitly to play GTA4 will go to their console seems like a very poor bet. I think they'll be lucky if they can split the sales down the middle, even without figuring other factors like MGS4 or Blu-ray into the mix.

Either way, the NPDs released in May, June, and July of this year should be interesting, to say the least.

Sony have played it very smart with the EU release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

That bundle in Europe is going to sell like all hell, the next few weeks, you get GTAIV coming out and it may well be the first game people buy for their new PS3s.

Sony should port GTAIV to PS2. Software sales through the roof.

In fact, that would set the roof on fire. We would need water, but we wouldn't care. We should just let the motherf*&cker burn as far as I'm concerned.

By the time they've toned the graphics and probably some of the content the PS2 is out of business
