Masahiro Kanagawa went on a stabbing spree, which left two people dead. One was killed on March 19th, another on March 23rd, and 8 others were left wounded. Mentioned on Japanese television was the fact that Kanagawa had a copy of Ninja Gaiden DS in his bag, and Eye of Judgment cards on his person. Ninja Gaiden DS went on sale March 19th in Japan, and Kanagawa’s first murder was on the 20th. Make of that what you will.

Details are vague on this story at the moment, kotaku spun the shit out of it.

There is obvious confusion here. According to one of the kotaku links:

Keep in mind that Kanagawa first murdered someone on March 19th and that Dragon Sword didn't go on sale on March 20th. (sic)

I stipulate this has little to do with games (even if he was an avid gamer) and more with a disturbed mind. He must have had access to a sword (katana?), when did he get hold of it? If he had a urge to kill, where do games (and movies, and cartoons, and books, and cultural influences) fit in? Did they fuel his urges or did they dampen them, providing an outlet? None of this can be easily read out of the scanty information available.

It's a tragedy anyway, and I hope nobody makes any more of it than that.

That's what kotaku are saying, which is why the news piece is barely legible.

He killed a few people, obtained the game, and then killed a lot more people? There's a bit of a logic gap here.

A Japanese person into Final Fantasy? Holy shit. Since most of the victims were stabbed in places like the neck, one "expert" was saying that it was through fighting games that Kanagawa learned about the body's weak points as assume things like that are only taught in video games."

Is there a person alive on this earth that doesn't know that stabbing someone in the neck kills them? What kind of 'experts' do they have in Japan anyways?

I thought it was funny that they said he learned the 'weak spots' from the game, it didn't take me playing a DS to know that you will bleed profusely from the neck and wouldn't 'Trauma Center: Under the Knife' have been more appropriate? :P
