Assuming this is true, that would mean in its 1st 5 years DVD would have outsold blu-ray worldwide for its first 5 years, but in the US alone (or something like that)?

Seems like a reasonable forecast, though, not a very favorable one for blu-ray. Plus, that's with "x" number of them being PS3's, which many people don't even buy movies for (though I'd suspect more people will be by then, but not necessarily everyone).

Looked up some more info. There's no way there are only 300m dvd players worldwide, because for 2006 alone, worldwide sales were over 140m players and recorders. So, being DVD's been around for some 11 years, I find it highly unlikely that for the rest of that time it's only sold double that 140m amount.

My question is: Won't there be by 2012, TVs that surpass 1080P? And if so that would make Blu-Rays replacement already in market or on the horizon.

I don't think there's much use for a resolution higher than 1080p with tv's under 50", and the majority of consumers buy 32 - 42".

Technology usually doesn't understand the concept of overkill.

I think they've already showcased a 2160p TV in Japan, but the cost will be too exorbitant for the mass market.

1080p is basically where we'll probably stay until some brilliant designers figure out how to do holographic 3D or some such.
