Sony chief says three-year company restructuring has put firm in an excellent position

Speaking earlier today, Sony chief executive Howard Stringer said that the firm’s three-year cost cutting reforms, which included the sale of its Cell CPU business to Toshiba, had placed the firm in a strong financial position that will allow it to “bring back some of the wow factor that is the Sony trademark” and allow Sony to focus of innovation going forwards.

He was also upbeat about the recent spike in PS3 sales, claiming that 200,000 consoles were selling each week in Europe and up to 50,00 each week in Japan, CNBC reports.

Stringer also added that the PlayStation Network is one of a number of products, along with the likes of its new OLED TVs and Rolly music player, that prove Sony is once again wowing the global technology market.

Sony also vowed to make smarter use of properties currently owned by its numerous divisions, such as the Spider-Man movies and singers such as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce Knowles. This is something Sony has previously come under fire for – but it now says that improving its record in this area will allow it to take on content-providing rivals such as Apple and Microsoft.

Mario and Sonic is not a good game.

i wonder what that 200k actually means in total sales for the month tho. sony is notorious for spinning this stuff to sound alot better than reality. take the phrase right after the bolded part. that implies that its a trend thats been going on. in reality, the p23 barely got over 50k in a week twice since january 1st

oh, but good job anyways

my thinking is that he knows the sales numbers for this week in Japan. 50,000 is a high number but perhaps the holiday season gave it a crazy boost.

Possible, but I think the sales in Japan wont increase much because the holiday season there is so small (They don't celebrate Christmas as there aren't many Christians)

What I would like to know from Sony is how long they have been selling at 200k per week (possibly just one?) and whether this is sold to retailer or sold to consumer. They could also just be outright lying just like what they did for sales of Casino Royal BRD but I think they've learned their lesson for that one.

at the GAF they are saying that PS3's are really hard to find in London and they seem to be accepting it. Plus, Bloomberg and some other reputable market reserch firms are reporting it as well. I think it's true. And Stringer is known to be a pretty good source, so it's possible.

Yeah they are selling very well here in UK, although, unlike the rest of Europe, I think the 360 and Wii (obviously) are still selling a little better. The Blu-Ray effect is having a small impact too but basically there's still a lot of brand loyalty here.

Wii is selling better, but according to my sources 360 is in last place this month.

Actually I think that he's going off past Famitsu. They had the PS3> 50k for 3 weeks in a row.
