HD-DVD is teh gone.

So, now its just a matter of whether blu-ray will win and start taking over DVD's market share, or if it will just stay a niche product.

I'll wait until Universal announces it before I say anything.

I guess HD DVD is over.

Im glad I returned the HD DVD player I bought instead of keeping it. It would suck to be suckered in to a betamax mess myself.

Maybe when people are getting rid of the things I might get a cheap player and some cheap movies, since its backwards with DVD and can replace my DVD player. This assumes of course I dont get a PS3 before that happens.

After 30 something years of trying to win a movie format war, it looks like Sony's FINALLY pulled it off.

That pretty much sums it up. From BetaMax to UMD, and now BluRay. Sony has FINALLY won one.

This isn't confirmed. None of the official news sources have gotten anything from Universal; it's "suspected" that they're now out from under their contract with HD DVD/Toshiba, but if they're indeed going to pull the plug on HD DVD, they still have to face the music about how to formulate a proper exit strategy from the format without looking like complete idiots in the process.

I bet 360 owners are now glad that HD-DVD wasn't forced on them from a 600$ price tag. It was just an option for you to throw away your money

(although I bought an HD-DVD addon. It's quite nice, except it will likely be discontinued soon. FIRE SALE here I come! )

Although that's somewhat true, I think that if the 360 would have kept a smaller price point than PS3 but with having an HD DVD drive in it, the format wars could be very different, HD DVD could be on top. If Microsoft manned up and took some initial sluggish sales like Sony did with PS3, it could have paid off in the long run, but they were either too worried or didn't think Toshiba had what it took, even though they won the last format war with DVD, well, technically (Since DVD was created by a collaboration of companies, but those companies largely used Toshiba's specifications).
