Why is the FPS genre gamings biggest?

Seriously, FPS has been the biggest genre since Halo was released. Why is the genre still going as strong as it is?

Will the shooting fevor ever die down? Or will this genre continue to dominate far into the future?

it has been the biggest ever since Counter-Strike was released, but anyway

i would say that its the biggest becouse its the easiest to play(in my opinion). In MMORPGs, you have to learn all the spells and how to use them as efficient as possible. There are even several goals in combat that you have to archive to gain victory. In mini-games, you have to learn all the different mini-games. In RTSs, you have to learn how to make strategies with different types of units.

In FPSs, you dont have to do this. Your main goal is to archive victory in as many combat situations as possible. The only goal to do so is to kill your opponent. You can learn how to efficiently use the different types of weapons, but all of them are there to deal damage to your opponent, which will cause him to die. The strategies can evolve quite a deal for the veteran players, but they all follow the simple "Run/Hide -> Shoot" with adjustments. Also, many of the games play quite equal.

Will this genre continue to dominate far into the future? I would myself say YES.

Here is the thing, which is the most advanced game released to the public? Crysis(FPS)
Which is the most famous gaming series in the same genre on the PC? Counter-Strike(FPS)(okay, some of you might say Warcraft, but Warcraft is mostly famous for WoW, and its not the same genre as the past games)
And finally, which game genre is mostly played over console-based internet? FPS(COD4 and Halo 3 are the flagships)

So it dominates for it's simplicity?

It has a fantastic multiplayer aspect to it it. It gives you the opportunity to do stuff you really can't do in reality.

But shouldn't such a repetitive formula go away? Is there really enough innovation and variety to sustain it much longer?

I say no. I'm getting tired of the FPS genre for it's constant repetetiveness and annoying quircks.

I'd say, because it's the closest to actually being in a video game. The only thing that sucks about FPS', is that you know there is a considerable amount of space between you and the TV.

FPS' on VR Glasses is probably the best FPS experience.

Because it gets your damn blood pumping. Not a huge fan, but its the illusion of killing that F*ck head that palsma stuck you. Also the simplicity; like in real life its real easy to pick up a gun and kill someone.

Simplicity and Multiplayer I guess. It's also the ability to wield those powerful weapons and fire them off anyway you choose. It's something you can't do in reality but, still based in it. At least for the most part. I guess thats also part of why I like CoD4 or Rainbow6 more then games like Halo. I like present day stuff versus fictional weapons. Where else can I shoot my friend in the face with a M4 and have us both laugh at it?

Yea, that pretty much describes it.

FPS games are also typically more fast paced and frantic than other multiplayer games, and fast paced games catch our attention a lot longer than say Multiplayer civilization, for instance.
