EA is Microsoft's dark knight that is gathering developers for them over this generation. The rumors of an EA console in 2010 is actually the next Xbox. I kinda like the theory of MS/EA teaming up for a console, it sort of makes sense from a business perspective. MS games control of more exclusives which pretty much means that if you want certain games (Madden, GTA etc.) you'd have to get their next console. EA not only gains major franchises but as a hardware partner, they'd be entitled to a share of the royalties from other developers. Such a move would be to starve Sony and Nintendo of their software libraries. It is a very daring scenario.

MS is currently trying to take over Yahoo for some reason. This move would put MS into debt but not anything that the company can't handle. However, it does prevent MS from acquiring other companies like EA or Take Two over the same time period.

The other thing MS would face is a stiff challenge from government regulators. EA on the other hand can skirt around them a bit. An MS + EA partnership on future hardware would also be subject to anti-trust regulators but pretty much at this point the damage is done via the EA take over of Take Two.
