What's with all the Sony hate in this thread? I fail to see how this is an arrogant or even stupid claim. They are saying they are going to support it and expect it to last 10 years. What's so hard to believe about that? It's Sony's decision how long they support their hand held. And this is hardly a case of Sony PR stupidity. "Gamers will get second jobs to buy the PS3" "PS3 is a tsunami" etc... are stupid PR quotes. "We'll support the PSP for 10 years" certainly is not.

Yeah, I figured that's a good thing that Sony actually support their products for as long as possible, even long after the successor is out.

The Sony hate stopped pretty quickly once it was shown that the PS1 had an 11 year life cycle. Everyone who was laughing at Sony's PSP claim got quiet fast after that.

I don't know about anyone else in this thread. I'm just tossing out a bit of random Sony hate so I can shove it in people's faces when they accuse me of being a rabid Sony faboy.

OK fine, the PS1 was being made till 2000 and whatever... and I suppose Sony said that the system will be supported for 10 years and not that it will be the only PSP system for 10 years but we haven't had a good Sony hate fest for ages

I think it's good that Sony are going to support their products for so long as do Nintendo (have only recently stopped consumer support for the NES) I doubt Microsoft will guarantee support for their consoles as long though!

or perhaps the people who laughed about that simlpy werent here in the 1 hour gap between those comments and this....

the PS1 did NOT have an eleven year life cycle. you can throw out the whole "this random game was made in 200X" but be serious, the console was dead in the water by the start of 03. if you really want to get technical about when a console is dead be my guest, but look at the realistic end of it too.

if i went and made a NES game this summer and had it published would we be able to say the NES had a 22 year life cycle?

seriously tho, wasnt a Dreamcast game made in just the last year or so? does that mean the console was still living? NO.

P.S. Whatever they do, they need to kick UMD to the curb. Mini-Blu-rays, flash chips, whatever, but UMDs are noisy dust magnets.

That's the first thing that popped up into my mind. UMD is really the only reason I could see the PSP not being their main portable platform for 10 years. With the rate at which flash is dropping it won't be long before that is a viable option for storing games. 5$ for a 1 gig flash drive and that isn't even cost.
