Life cycle is when a console starts production until it ends production, not until some random date decided by random people.

Japanese release of PS1: December 1994
Sony ceases production of PS1: March 2006

the PS1 did NOT have an eleven year life cycle. you can throw out the whole "this random game was made in 200X" but be serious, the console was dead in the water by the start of 03. if you really want to get technical about when a console is dead be my guest, but look at the realistic end of it too.

if i went and made a NES game this summer and had it published would we be able to say the NES had a 22 year life cycle?

seriously tho, wasnt a Dreamcast game made in just the last year or so? does that mean the console was still living? NO.

be practical a little bit.
I consider "Death of its lifecycle" when the games can no longer be purchased at standard consumer stores like Walmart and Target, which typically happens after the last games are made. Walmart here sold their remaining PS1 games/systems or transferred them to other locations in 2006. Technically, there are still some PS1 accessories sold there (like 3rd party memory cards) but accessory sales usually outlast both system sales and game sales, because people still play those systems for a while.

The life cycle was over 11 years. They were on the production line for that length of time. You can say that it wasn't relevant for some time before that, but it doesn't change the fact that it's life cycle was well over 10 years.

Maybe they are hoping people will buy games for it in 10 years?

NES

"Nintendo of Japan continued to repair Famicom systems until October 31, 2007, attributing the decision to discontinue support to an increasing shortage of the necessary parts."

"In the wake of ever decreasing sales and the lack of new software titles, Nintendo of America officially discontinued the NES by 1995. Despite this, Nintendo of Japan kept producing new Nintendo Famicom units for a niche market up until October 2003, when it officially discontinued the line."

Also, I hove found at least one game (Super Donkey Kong 2) released in 1999...

Would you give the NES a 10 year (1995), 18 year (2003) or 21 year (2007) cycle?

"On February 24, 2004, Sega released their final Dreamcast game, Puyo Pop Fever. Afterwords, a small number of third-party games were still being released, such as Chaos Field released in December 2004, Trizeal released in April 2005, Radilgy released in February 2006, Under Defeat released in March 2006, and most recently Last Hope released January 2007, Trigger Heart Exelica released February 2007, and Karous released March 2007."

Would you give the dreamcast an 8 year cycle?

Usually what I think of, and think most people think of, is when it is a competing console, so xbox's life cycle stopped when the 360 was released, not when the last game was released. Otherwise you are just putting out a deceptive arbitrary number. Who cares if they made 100 or even a few thousand ps1's in 2004, it didn't matter that they did, the console was passed.

Just to be picky, the last PS1 was made in 2005 but was is sent to Japan, NA or Europe? If the last one was only sent to Japan in 2003 (for example) then effectively the console only lasted 9 years there. As the PS1 didn't get released till 1996 in EU and if the last made PS1 went there and not NA/Japan then the PS1 has still only lasted 9 years in that territory.

I don't know the facts so don't quote me on anything, but the PS1 may not have actually lasted 10 years in any one place.

So, by that extention the PS2s life cycle is now over even though it's still selling like all hell?

Where the console was available doesn't change it's overall lifecycle. A lifecycle for any consumer product would be from when the first one is sold up until the last one rolls off the production line. Even if games are still being made or sold brand new in stores or if the company continues to support a console, the lifecycle ends once the last new console is made.
