Question Console sales

Sony has just released a Quarterly Fiscal Report (under SEC rules), clearly stating that they had SOLD (not SHIPPED UNITS, but CONFIRMED END USER SALES) 14.4 million PS3 consoles by the end of April 2008. This report can't possibly be wrong, because providing shareholders and potential investors with false informations would be illegal. This means that the sales numbers prominently featured on your homepage are quite wrong, possibly underestimating the actual number of PS3 units sold by as much as 50% (once you factor in numbers for May, June and the first three weeks of July, supposedly very strong months thanks to the release of MGS4 and the new bundles). Your WII numbers also look quite low, while the 360 sales seem to be about right.

We are fully aware that the sales numbers on the front page are off, and has been for quite some time. Currently we are discussing whether we want to keep the numbers on the front page, or in which form we wish to present it and the site in general.

Welcome as a new member, and do join in the discussions here.

Thanks Romanc, I'll try to stick around as long as there are not too many fanboys, as I'm way too old for all that 'my weewee is bigger than your weewee' kind of talk, and I can't withstand it for long.

Keeping (up-to-date) numbers on the homepage wouldn't be a bad choice, in my opinion, as those numbers are not only attracting the attention of the videogaming community, but also of the mainstream public, and everyone seems to be talking about them, from breakfast TV shows to The Financial Times.

But on a personal level I don't think they are that important.

Incidentally, I have fond memories of your hometown: of the Viking Ships, the Cathedral, the Fortress, the National Gallery and especially of the beautiful Vigeland Park, where I spent many happy hours.

We've been pretty good recently as far as fanboys go. Everyone will of course have their favourite console and will usually bias towards it, but we don't really have many members that will blindly and constantly preach about their favourite to the point of it being annoying.

And welcome to the forums. Hopefully you will enjoy your time here.

14.4 million? That seems too high. Famitsu reported only 9.24m sold.
oh, and welcome to the forum.

Hey boffo, hi codenamelenny, nice to meet you.

9.24 is simply the number of PS3 units they sold in 2007. To calculate the total number of consoles sold you have to add the 2006 sales (which amount to 3.57 million units) and the 2008 sales (1.56 million units in Q1).

3.57 + 9.24 + 1.56 = 14.37 units sold

You can double check the numbers here:

Yeah, the PS3 has certainly started catching up a bit. A great first post and analysis by the way Annarella!

Just to confirm that even though Sony report units sold, that is still only sold to retailers (they used to record shipped as in shipped to their own warehouses ready for sale) They still do not record actual sales to direct consumers. However, that means that the numbers are going to be simliar as retailers will only order what they expect to sell.

It can be estimated that the numbers sold to consumer is about a month or 2 behind the sold to retail. This means that around 14.3-14.4 million PS3s are sitting in peoples houses around the world as of now.

I know the lifetime NPD numbers have the PS3 pretty much right on 5 million in the US so unless 50% of the worlds PS3 sales have been there it's well over 10 million. Vgchartz lists the PS3 at a bit over 14 million worldwide as well.

If you are not going to update the 'sales figures' on your front page on a regular basis, might I suggest removing that page as soon as possible as not to 'mislead' anyone any further?
Thanks.
Great forums by the way.
