| I don't think Sony were actively trying to compete with Nintendo in handhelds. They just set out to make a portable gaming and multimedia device, it's a bit more high end than the DS in terms of what it can do, but it's aimed at the same people who bought a Game Gear (a portable Master System). Basically, I'm a big fan of the PSP, it may not match Nintendo is terms of sales, but in the handheld market no one does, but it's done a lot better than other competitors.

For the sake of argument lets use the rough scale of PS2 sales 40:40:20 for the PSP meaning Europe has sold about 7,500,000 PSPs (Very possible, I see them a lot) meaning that's at least 20,710,000 + 2 months of US and UK sales which could easily mean it is at 21,000,000 by now. I'd say this 21 million is a minimum of what it's sold but it won't be much higher. |

| Nintendo basically have a monopoly in the handheld market, Sony would be more foolish to think they could compete, instead they made the PSP just as a multimedia device that also happens to play games.

And by the way, its a gaming device that happens to have multimedia, not the other way around.

| The DS and the PSP are for two different audiences. You are retarded if you don't think Sony knew that when they released it. Corporations like Sony don't go into a one horse race to beat the other competitor, they join to take a share of the pickings. Sony knew there is a audience for their product that Nintendo wasn't catering for which is why they released it.

Seriously, open your eyes you senile ignoramus. The PSP has multimedia features. There are people who, shock shock horror, like gadgets that do lots of shit. They marketed it as a Handheld multimedia device because they knew people are into that kind of stuff. Not just people who even had a PS2. It's a different audience. |

| Piratethom is actually correct. Originally when Sony released their handheld, they publically stated this is not a competition with the DS, we aren't here to eat nintendo's customers. Also nintendo said the same thing, we think of it as a peace thing not a competition. Then the whole "war" thing started in I believe either 05 or 06 E3. When one of nintendo's executives said he laughs at how they are crushing the PSP and how their portable was amazingly better.
