Default Is PSP region free for games?

Reason I ask is games here are really expensive (for what you're getting, or, compared to other regions) or are not due out for several more months.

Yeah, it will play any game from any region.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure it isn't region free. If you have custom firmware it is though.

No, it is, my Metal Gear Ac!d 2 is the US version and works. Movies are possibly region locked, but games aren't.

Oh, ok then. Thats cool. I thought that was one of the reasons to have custom firmware though.

I don't think PSP is region free. I had one and in my Custom Firmware 3.90M33 I had a feature in the Recovery Menu: Fake UMD Region, to allow other region UMD to run. For me it means playing another region UMD with official firwmare is not possible most of the time

My PSP is 3.90M33 too, but its kinda screwed, all the buttons at the bottom like HOME and START do not work, and its nothing to do with the buttons at the bottom, its the software/firmware!

Getting a slim later this month though - keeping it official firmware too, for remote play on PS3!

This is a really old article but it confirms that the PSP is region free for games.

IGN: PSP: Region Free Games

Quote:
PSP adopts both a "worldwide" and "regional" code system," explains Molly Smith of SCE America. "For games on PSP there is no region code. However, due to language and system issues, quality assurance procedures are done in each territory. Therefore, we recommend purchasing both the hardware and corresponding software in the same market/territory."
