Bulbasuar is the best grass starter ever, Chickorita was coool also

but the most interesting one has got to be the water one

Early pokemans that are good (at least for playing through the main quest) in D/P:

Shinx
Starly
Geodude
Machop
Budew

I use bulba for my real team(arguably the best grass pokemon)
and with the switch in the moves system(beam attacks are no all special attacks regardless of element) Mew2 is now posibly even stronger
imagine taking a mew2s hyperbeam....>.<
