That's the main gist of the game. You catch pokemon, you level them up, you earn badges at the gyms. There are lots and lots of side things to do to net items, rare pokemon, and provide general other forms of amusement. The game also demands social interaction since without trading you can't get every standard pokemon. (Standard meaning part of the regional Sinnoh Pokédex. The national one includes every Pokémon possible, most of which are going to require importing from GBA games, going through abnormally extra effort, or tapping in to a Nintendo promotion.)
(There's also cheating, but well, that's cheap.

Not sure if Nintendo's implemented anything to try to prevent it in this new generation though. Gamesharks are a no go on the DS but save editing is a possibility. However the wifi end could implement a form of sanity checking..)
