Unless they can establish WorldSpace as a competator this will never happen. And they won't be able to establish WorldSpace as a competator because they only broadcast outside of the US.

I don't think it's a sure bet, but I do think they've got more going for them than the satellite merger. The problem with arguing that cable's your main competitor is that satellite was available and employed in many, many places cable simple isn't an option. However I can't really think of many people using satellite radio because they can't pick up local stations.

I have Sirius and it works bloody well everywhere where I go. I had XM and had problems in the mountains and well, many places. I have always had better reception with Sirius. The merger has been talked about for a long time... Hopefully it goes through because it can only make them better.

As for why pay for radio... sure I can stick a bunch onto my MP3 player.. but when I am gone for a week hunting.. I really dont want to hear the same songs over and over.. If I am playing CD's offroading sucks nuts..... $500 lifetime subscription to Sirius is well worth it... I forget what XM was though.

I'm a bit baffled here. Haven't you guys access to public/free radiostations? At home I have access to 20+ radio stations, all free (no payable options whatsoever), 3 or 4 of these have nationwide coverage, including the mountains.

One could make the argument that satellite radio would have more choices and perhaps more that appealed to you.

Whether this would actually be true or not, I don't know.

I prefer better then CD quality sound. Regular radio sounds like crap.. two.. I HATE COMMERCIALS!!! Most of the radio stations around here have some form of commercials taking up most of the time.. two songs.. 5 mins of adverts... 2 mins of 'News' or / Whats going on around town (usally disguised adverts), 1 song, 2 mins of adverts, 5 mins of 'News' two songs... 5 mins of adverts... so the cycle goes. Also the songs they play are current top ten.. Sirius and XM both have songs LONG before the regular radio stations get them (buying power) Hell, songs that are just getting to my local terrestrial radio stations I was listening to back in the Spring. Also... when the mountains are made up 20% Iron, 50%other metals 30% rock/dirt, they actually absorb the radiowaves. The tower they have for our main radio station is supposed to cover 250KM, it barely does 50KM.

Goldy you are correct... Sirius has over 150 better the CD quality stations, including Blue Collar Comedy, Playboy, Howard Stern, then lots of category under every genre.

Well loving XM as I do, we have 73 different music channels, 39 news, sports, talk and entertainment channels, 21 regional traffic and weather channels and 23 play-by-play sports channels. We have the entire MLB, Nascar as well as NHL. We have National Lampoon Comedy Radio, Oprah, Opie and Anthony, Playboy and lots of category under every genre.
