If it gets some big movie studios behind it, it might have a chance.

It's DOA, people. Toshiba pulled out all the stops and made its pricepoint obsolete. The best price on Amazon is $199.

There is a few optical formats emerging that are incredible but will never make it to mainstream in my belief
Well technically the share of either HD format is so pitifully small compared to DVD that anything could happen. Heck, download formats could be the next big way. Or maybe no format will win and DVD will survive thanks to improvements in encoding to allow for better compression.

I doubt any format will catch on until HD moves on to a resolution that scales properly from standard definition and becomes cheaper, thus not rendering all of your SD content worthless due to the muddy look caused by imperfect scaling.

Ill-informed you are. Ever watched a DVD on a 1080p HD DVD player? Beautiful. Not amazingly beautiful, but its beautiful.

Ever notice that most people still have VHS collections, home movies on tape, and SD television? Even if you upconvert all of that shit you're still making a compromise in the process. No upconversion DVD player can make something look as good as a proper 2:1 or 3:1 pixel ratio.

Agreed... not to mention the whomever wins the format war will require companies to support players to play ALL the media (right now Blu-Ray & HD DVD combo players) to not alienate the early adopters.

Yeah, I know other formats (like laserdisk and minidisk) did not allow this, but since they are all the same "type" of media (CD/DVD-Based and same size) it would be a heck of a lot easier to do so. In essence, while it's up in the air which format will win, and even though the winner "may not yet be released", the companies who ultimately make the players will need to support both Blu-Ray and HD DVDs once a winner is determined to "save face" and appeal to the public so they do not have 3 (or more) different players to watch movies alone!

I'll stick with DVDs for a while... There's also the Holographic Versatile Disc (3.9 TB) and the Protein-covered Disc (possible 50 TB)
