it is one of the things why oil is really crucial to the US and why it is resistant to change the habits, great part of the economy/lifestyle is based on the heavy use of oil. i've heard, e.g., that the traveling by trains is useless and slower than traveling by car??

I wouldn't mind seeing more commercial trains in production, it would be like the 1800's were. of course we would have to build more tracks, and then there's the train robbers.
