| Just in case you missed it, let me list you a few things that have been improved in FPS games: 1) graphics--we all know this and there's nothing wrong with better graphics. 2) improved AI--but maybe you all like the enemies to run at you like goombas. 3) more and better online features, play modes, etc. 4) better story-telling--look at games like HL and COD4, not to mention Portal--these games do a great job of telling the story around you without a bunch of shitty cutscenes. 5) rumble--this is not a new innovation, but someone was mentioning they hadn't seen any since Quake--this really adds to the game. 5) diversity of the genre--yes we all know about the dozens and dozens of WWII shooters--but there are plenty of others out there--from Bioshock (which incorporates some RPG elements) to COD4 (one of the few set in modern times) to Half Life (very original) to PORTAL...Portal is one of the freshest experiences in gaming in the last decade..if you haven't played it, do it now. plus, you even have an RPG like Oblivion where you can play from a first-person perspective. Oh, and for you Ninthings, I'll throw in Metroid Prime for you. There's more diversity there than you think. Add to this list a Sci Fi shooter like Halo and more tactical types like R6 Vegas and you get a fairly large array of games within the genre..hell, look at team fortress 2--that's a different game. Compare this to the platformer/adventure game where you basically just run around collecting some stupid stuff and unlocking new doors. 6) better sound that's all i feel like listing for now.

| I wouldn't call portal or metroid prime a FPS. Even without out those games I think FPS have gone a little ways. Bioshock is the best example of FPS's progress though the recent years. But I do have to agree most FPSs are very similar. But there is more variety than in JRPGs or racing sims. Last edited by codenamelenny; May 18th, 2008 at 05:05 AM. |

I think what's needed in gaming is more genres. There's only so far you can take a genre until it's full. Probably why FPS has been highlighted. There are so many FPD games out now that a lot jsut seem the same. Same thing happened with platformer years ago. |

| Nintendo fans are fine, but it annoys me when they blindly defend the Wii and then say how no other games are innovative. You can argue that Nintendo took the control interface to another level this gen (although in my experience with the Wii, the results are mixed and I don't necessarily prefer the motion controls). But in nearly every other category, Nintendo has either stayed the same or fallen back. No doubt, gameplay is the most important thing--but it's not the only thing. And plenty of non-Wii games have great gameplay that has been developed gradually over a few generations. But in terms of AI, story-telling, graphics, online, depth, and sound, Nintendo is behind Microsoft's and Sony's consoles. Nintendo also has a HUGE third party problem, which hasn't really changed since the N64. Having owned an N64, I got pretty tired of poorly executed 3rd party titles (except from Rare). At this point, the only Nintendo title I'm really interested in playing is Zelda. I'm kind of tired of Mario and I actually think Banjo could potentially be a better game than SMG. Don't get me wrong, a game of MarioKart is still fun, but ultimately not enough for me to get a Wii. But hey, if that's what you like, fine by me. Just don't say stupid stuff about how the Wii is so much better. It's almost like those annoying Mac vs. PC commercials.
