After Chrono Trigger I had no clue why the hell Square went back to random battles.

Random battles are great, I have nothing against them, they add a more realistic experience and more depth to the game.

If done properly, a JRPG would work without random battles, but most JRPGs dont. FFXII, for example, doesn't work! Chrono Trigger, did work. Xenosaga series works.

because when you're walking a group 3-5 monsters, each the size a car, can appear all at once without warning

Random battles take into account that you can't avoid every bad situation and that sometimes, things are out of your control. You don't want to wander around in a bad part of the city because you don't want to get mugged. Same concept. The longer you spend wandering around in fight areas, the better chance you're going to run into a fight.

Now if some people don't like that, fine. But you don't hear random battle advocates bitching that some games don't include random battles. Don't bitch about games that do have it.

Let everyone enjoy their own interests.

You can't avoid every battle in Chrono Trigger. Or in FFXII.

True, but games with the random battles COULD have the monsters "rush out behind something" or whatever, to make things realistic, but still random.

After Chrono Trigger I wondered why Square never made something even remotely close to being as amazing as that.

This and Super Mario RPG stand tall in my Best of RPG's-list.
