OS X for now.

I am seriously considering a Linux install for the quad for dual booting. 64 bit PowerPC Linux is where its at as IBM has been putting a lot of work into that area for their big iron servers. I've heard of a variant of OpenSolaris for PowerPC based machines called Polaris that might be worth looking into. I also want to recompile the Darwin kernel with better optimizations than Apple uses by default. Apple typically sets the flags to keep the disk size and memory usage down, not for maximum performance. Along the same lines I want to pick up IBM's XLC compiler for OS X and see what performance I can get from that compared to gcc.

Beyond just software optimizations, I'm pretty sure the quad can be overclocked using software in the OS X environment. I've already found a Linux kernel patch that allows for on the fly clock speed changing of G5 class chips. Similarly, I found an old kernel extension for OS X 10.3.x that allows for on the fly clock speed changes of certain G3 class chips. So I would have a base to build upon for such a project.

I've also been thinking about putting OpenBSD on the old 550 Mhz box to use it as a router/local DNS/local DHCP server etc.

It all comes down to how much free time I have to play with them.

When SOHO routers were still absurdly priced I put Debian on an old Quadra 605 to use as an IP spoofer. Then routers became affordable and I repurposed it into a file/print server. I think my family still has it chugging away back home.

Lawl, your setup sounds similar to mine except you actually get decent video games.

Opteron 185 @ 3.1 GHz (Thermalright SI-128)
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
Corsair 2Gigs ddr400 @ ddr 480
Thermaltake Toughpower 650w
EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB KO ACS3 @670/2160
X-fi Fatality (with leaked drivers it works properly in vista, finally)

Some might bash me for not going the extra mile and getting a gtx, but at these speeds my gts actually outperforms the gtx in some benchmarks, plus it cost less
