Hey guys, you need to think for the future too...Now he might only need 650 watt PSU, but 3,4,5 years down the line when upgrading...hell he mind as well just have the surplus now.

And I agree with X51...if your getting a quad core processor...just spend the extra buck and get the 3xxmb 8800 card...then he will need more power.

300 is not enough to even power the card man...it wont work. and get the 8800, not the 8600...upgrade man, just go for the best.

Dude, trust me... he won't need more even if he upgrades to a bigger card. The 8800GTX 768MB only requires a 450W PS...

Hey man...times change. I remember our old Win 95 system...with Pentium 2 333MHz, the 64mb of RAM, the Geforce 2MX, and the thing needed the same amount of power as it takes me to get it up (hehe) Times change man. In 4 years, for a top of the line gaming system, 1K will be nothing!

In 4 years, it'll be just a good enough time to re-start the build procedure. I'll tweak my PC every now and often, but you will eventually need to start from square 1 to get the top performance. 600-700 PSU is fine.

Bwahahahahahahahaha. My quad system has a 1000W power supply to feed its 2.5 Ghz processors, 4 GB of RAM and Radeon X1900XT video card.

Anyway, I do think a 850W power supply would be a bit over kill. A power supply doesn't continually draw its maximum rating (thankfully) so going into overkill terroritory won't be that bad. It is just that such high rated power supplies tend to command a very high price premium and you're not going to really be getting your moneys worth.

There are some handy online PSU caclulators. Note that this one does a good job of telling you what the continual power draw of your system will be. (Right now I have your configuration at 346W with a few USB devices and a few fans). You don't want to get a power supply that'll be continually running near its peak output. In all honesty, a good 550W power supply (example one, two, three) would do you fine.
