Default What do you use?

Well I thought to get some life (hopefully) in this section I could start out with a thread where we Linux users can share what we are using and have used in forms of Linux dists.

Maybe sometime in the future this thread can get expanded into tips 'n trix (or we create a new one for that).

I myself currently use Ubuntu because it's so damn easy and "it just works". I still have a partition with Win XP tho just for the internet bank for one of my bank accounts (to get it to work under wine simply isn't worth it) but 99.99999% of the time I boot into Ubuntu.

I have been using Linux on my home computer on and off for the last 6 years and earlier I have been playing around with Mandrake, Red Hat, Suse and Debian (I also probably forgot some dist now).

Main issue for taking so long for moving almost completely (stupid bank) to Linux (didn't do it until late last year) was because of games.

Also I got to say that Ubuntu is lovely, it's far easier than most other linux dists have been to this point. It's easier than windows (it's different from windows but in no way harder once you get over the initial linux threshold).

It fits my PC needs. (still won't stop me from getting a mac with OS X next time I'll buy a new computer )

Before I started using Vista (which I am thinking about going back to Linux, since Vista has its own annoying issues), I was using Gentoo, and using Cedega to play games.

How come you don't just use Virtualbox to run Windows in a virtual machine? Or tell your bank to stop being Windows nazis and get with the program?

I first tried out linux with a distro called SLS, it came on floppies and was a nightmare. I never got X working, and it made me drop it until i installed red hat 4.1 years later. Stayed with red hat and later mandrake for several years. Currently i have Suse on one old PC. Lately I've tried ubuntu, knoppix and sabayon, but have not actually found one that have stayed on....

I miss old Mandrake. Mandriva is just not the same....

Gentoo. I love portage as a package manager, I like being able to optimize and customize as desired, and I don't mind the wait of compiling or risk of running from the testing tree for stuff extremely up to date.

That being said, when I recommend a distro for people to try Linux with or for those that just want something that works right out of the box, Ubuntu for sure.

Isn't CentOS the successor to Red Hat?

I think Fedora is more the successor of Red Hat, but CentOS isn't far behind.
