The Mac Pro towers are often compared to commodity PC's you pick up at any ordinary electronics store like Best Buy. That thing is that the Mac Pro's sport a system closer to server hardware. The Mac Pro's have two processor sockets, dual FSB, FB-DIMM memory (server stuff for reliability and capacity, not performance), multiple PCI-E 16x physical slots and a nice 1000W power supply. In fact, when the Mac Pro's were introduced, Apple's systems were under cutting Dell's prices for a similarly configured system by nearly $1000 US. That was awhile back and Dell has since dropped the price of their workstations to compete with Apple on price. Then there are the laptops which compare rather well to PC's in the same class. Apple has a really good combination of speed, size, weight, battery life and price that is hard to a competitor that matches what Apple offers in all those catagories. If you're willing to sacrifice in one or two areas, sure you can find something cheaper but it certainly won't be better unless all you care about is price. Quote:
All the major graphics programs are availible on the Mac. Adobe Creative Suite, Corel Draw, Corel Painter, Maya, Lightwave, Cinema 4D etc. all have a Mac version. One could cite the little, lesser known applications availible on Windows but there are plenty of those on the Mac side as well. Graphic Converter is a program I'm particularlly fond of due to its simplicity and usefulness. Acorn is the fastest image editing program I've ever used since it utilizes a GPU for processing instead of a CPU. Pixemator is supposed to be just as fast since it also uses a GPU for rendering. Photoshop is an absolute slug compared to these programs. Then there is Fractal Domains which I've used for my own Deviant Art creations. |
